"It's just common sense, keep things clean and neat as much as possible and your birds will be happier and healthier," paid Dunbar. Clean feeders thoroughly at the beginning of the season. Wooden feeders should be cleaned with a 10 per cent bleach solution and left to dry thoroughly before hanging, said Dunbar. After that feeders should ideally be cleaned every couple of weeks but high quality feeders with better designs can be left longer. Also be aware during the early winter months birds are intermittent, trying to look for feeders with good food sources and shelter nearby. They may come back to your feeder later in the season, said Bennett. Sometimes birds may not come to your feeders even with the highest quality seed because the feeding style needs to be changed, he said.
