protected under the umbrella of
traditional agriculture with more
lenient environment practices. Farm
organizations would gain public
respect by placing caps on livestock
units per site, extending outmoded
set -back distances and promoting
enabling legislation to litigate against
repeat environmental spills or
mismanagement. The present
disgrace of unenforced or inadequate
law (not guideline, regulation,
suggestion ...) for farm compliance is
a recipe for losing consumer
confidence, threatening our air and
water quality, and even dividing
farmers from farmers. Citizens
cannot compromise environmental
degradation to help businesses.
I challenge Agriculture Minister
Hardeman to immediately join forces
with MOE, MNR, Tourism and
County Planning Departments
(including Health Councils) to
address megabarns while we still can.

Thank you for
wonderful magazine
Thank you so much tor the
wonderful magazine The Rural
Voice. We look forward to each
issue; we enjoy reading it all; we pass
it on to friends!
Your perspective is so needed, and
encouraging. How good to read about
organic farming, environmental
issues, communities, land trust ideas,
labour issues, etc. Also to hear good
news about creative and persistent
farmers.
I have no suggestions for
improvement; just keep up the
questioning stance! The challenges
for local farmers are similar to those
in the rest of Canada and the world,
so perhaps some broader
linkages/connections could help in
the resistance against corporate
ownership and factory farming?
Again, many thanks.0
