48 THE RURAL VOICE
Advice
certification program. The objective
of the course is to have veterinarians
teach producers three key principles:
1. develop a team approach to
managing livestock medicines,
2. read, understand and follow the
label, and
3. develop or enhance on-farm
records or management systems.
It is estimated that 650 courses
will be offered from the fall of 2001
to the spring of 2003. Species-
specific courses are being offered,
with about 20 participants per
course. The course is currently being
offered at $50 to participants, with a
grant from the Agricultural
Adaptation Council providing up to
half of the program costs. Once grant
monies are no longer available,
course costs to participants will rise
to double the current levels.
Producers are encouraged to take the
course early to take advantage of the
lower rates.
Impending government legislation
will require the successful
completion of this course in order to
purchase over-the-counter
medicines. This is expected to take
effect on April 1, 2003. Producers
who do not have a certificate by this
date will continue to be able to
obtain livestock medicines from a
veterinarian with whom they have an
established veterinarian -client -
patient relationship. A livestock
medicines certificate is valid for five
years from the date of issue.
The Livestock Medicines
Education Committee has contracted
with Ridgetown College to
administer the program. To find out
about course dates and locations in
