• On Pierre Trudeau: "I remember
being at meetings up here (to Grey -
Bruce) where they used to condemn
the prime minister but 'that Whelan
was a good guy'. I wouldn't have
been good for anything at all if it
hadn't been for Trudeau backing

If not for Trudeau's support,
Whelan's efforts to support farmers

Perth barn owner
ordered to add
exhaust stacks
A Perth County swine producer
has been ordered to construct two
60 -foot exhaust stacks on each of his
two weaner barns by April 1, 2002 to
disperse smell or have the barns shut

The ruling came from the Normal

hearing was the culmination of
complaints from neighbouring dairy
farmers that their quality of life was
being ruined by smells coming from
the barns. The barns' owner said he
had received an estimate of $82,750
for each stack, or $329,000 total. The
neighbour who launched the
complaint said he had estimates that
the stacks would cost $25,000 each.
The barns, each 52 by 160 feet,
were constructed in 1994 and 1995.
Between August 3 and August 17,
1995 the neighbours filed three
occurrence reports with the Ministry
of Environment about the smells

the house of the farmer's mother.
The dairy farming family kept a
journal for four years, claiming that
