The Rural Voice, 2001-12, Page 33fundraising events," she said.
"Working at a fundraising event is
not only a fundraiser for your church,
club or group, but also a social
activity, a chance to meet and work
alongside your friends and
neighbours."
HBaring only the rumours of
the letter's contents, Fischer
finally decided she wanted to
know for sure what the expectations
of the Health Unit were. Following
the holding of her own church's
long-standing dinner for 400 people,
she contacted the Health Unit and
had a copy of the letter faxed to her.
She was assured by one health
official that the letter was not
intended to cause the panic it had.
With that in mind she organized a
meeting for concerned
representatives of various community
groups to hear Lou D'Alessandro and
Kate Cassidy, health inspectors with
the Grey Bruce Health Unit.
"The Health Unit is not here to
shut you down," D'Alessandro
reassured people at the meeting.
FOOD SAFETY TIP:
Take care not to contaminate
other foods with raw foods.
"What we want is to work with you."
This is not necessarily the case in
some areas of the province, he
indicated. Strict interpretation of
regulations could mean that
everything served at a dinner had to
be prepared in an inspected facility.
It would end the practice of people
cooking parts of the meal at home
and bringing it to the church or
community hall.
And there is reason for concern
behind this strict interpretation of the
regulations, D'Alessandro said. For
instance, a meal being prepared in
the Teeswater church where the
meeting was held would use water
from wells that are regularly tested.
Food coming from the homes of
those living on farms in the area
might be made using water from
wells that were never tested.
Churches and service groups have
an exemption from the public health
regulations for meals made for their
own members, but if the public is
being invited in and tickets are being
Lsold, there is no exemption from the
same regulations that apply to
restaurants and other commercial
