The Green Stetson and farm politics As the days grow shorter and the air cooler, the beginning of fall brings with it another season — Annual meetings. For the BCFA this happens October 26 in Underwood. Here is the opportunity for those who don't think the Federation is doing its job representing all types of farmers. to run for a position on the board and become involved with your peers. The time commitment can be as little as one night per month to as much as can be spared by the various board members. With the current board being a diverse group from cash crop, beef (feeder and cow -calf), dairy, sheep, tender fruit, horticulture, poultry (egg and broiler) enterprises, a wide range of experiences and opinions are the board's greatest asset. The topics of discussion, motions and resolutions are very seldom unanimous, but all points of view are welcome at the table for reasoned debate. One of the ongoing topics is farm property tax, the discrepancies and the increases. Review your own property tax statement, and talk to neighbours, municipal councillors, or BCFA board members if you have any concerns. As a personal example our own property tax increased over $800 this year with the updated assessment. A fixture in farm politics for a great part of his political career, this former cabinet minister is vvell known for his intense promotion of Canadian Agriculture. Never at a loss for words, this elder statesman will be sure to entertain, provoke thought, and offer an insight to the political arm -twisting that goes on behind the scenes.
