The Rural Voice, 2001-10, Page 21BUILDERS BUILDERS Though he was not present, Professor Bernie Erven's written presentation on "people -centred management" was available for those attending the meeting. He wrote there is a growing body of evidence that businesses employing people - oriented management are more successful in meeting their goals than businesses with production -oriented management. This occurs because: • people work harder when informed, involved and empowered. • work smarter when encouraged to learn and apply what they learn. • stay longer when their career goats are being satisfied. • build an attachment to their current place of employment when they feel important, engaged and "socially" involved. • managers, too, are more effective when enjoying a steady stream of people successes. people -centred management begins with a change in the attitude of managers, not employees, Erven wrote. Improvements depend on attitudes toward people, interpersonal skills and human resources procedures. "The key manager attitudes are trust, empathy, optimism, humility, openness, fairness and a willingness to share glory," Erven wrote. "The importance of these attitudes is emphasized by a recognition that most of what a manager does involves interpersonal relationships. Machines can be hooked together with no consideration of trust, empathy, humility, fairness and shared glory. People cannot develop into a productive team without consideration of these attitudes." The four key interpersonal skills , are communication, conflict management and conflict resolution, leadership and discipline. Giving clear messages and listening and using feedback are especially important. Commun- ications skills are important in everything from interviewing while hiring, to building rapport in the management team and with employees, to performance reviews and conflict resolution. .Conflict is inevitable in farming situations, whether between employees, between employees and BRUSSELS LIVESTOCK 887-6461 887-6811 SALES Special Fall Sales, 2001 Mon..
