Fields that will host plowing compe-
titions next year have already been
planted in hay.
Since the fair was added to the plow-
ing match an extra day was added.
For the first time ever, the match will
be extended until Sunday.
The 2002 International Plowing
match committees have been
busy designing and planning
the layout of the match. The
McDonalds have been to many other
matches to plan where things will go.
"We're trying to take the best of
what we've seen in other areas and
put them to use," McDonald said.
For the McDonalds, having the
match on their land means planting
crops that yield early in the summer
on the site. On the area of the tented
city alfalfa was planted. This year
the hay was baled and will be used
for the fares cattle. Next year,
McDonald hopes to get two cuts of
hay off the area before the plowing
match. He estimates people will start
moving things onto the tented city
area around the first of August. In
the trailer park and plowing areas
McDonald will plant wheat and
under seed it with red clover. With
hundreds of acres of wheat and hay
McDonald believes he will have
more hay and straw than needed and
plans to sell the extra. The
McDonalds own 3,000 acres and
about 1,100 of those will be used for
