that's pioneering work here in
Ontario" says Bill Bodenhamer,
President of Toxin Alert Inc.
This new technology is gearing up
to become commercially available in
the next few years, and it could
revolutionize the food diagnostic
area, says Hall.
Hall's research will he presented
at the University of Guelph exhibit
on South Mall, where their new
display highlighting their research
contributions to the advancement of
Canadian agriculture will be
unveiled.
11e display will also present
information on the Human
Nutraceutical Research Unit.
the only organization in Canada
where controlled human testing of
nutraceuticals takes place. The
Centre investigates the effects of
foods such as ginseng on
performance, health and other
characteristics.
Another subject that is getting a
lot of ink in farm publications is the
return of natural fibre crops to farms
and industry. Hemp, flax and other
ag fibres are lighter, stronger,
biodegradable, renewable and may
soon prove to be cheaper than many
synthetic fibres.
The steadily widening gap
between oil supply and oil
consumption in North America is
driving researchers to look carefully
at replacements for petro -chemical
products. As new applications are
found for ag fibres in industry, new
crop opportunities appear for
farmers.
This year's Ag Fibre Expo will
feature a number of companies from
North America and Europe which are
busy developing new products made
from hemp, flax, switchgrass, reed
canary grass and other ag fibres.
"Demand for these products is
growing steadily," says Doug Albin,
co-ordinator for the Ag Fibre Expo.
The list of companies includes
Sanelink Corp., a European
manufacturer of hemp and flax fibre
for ropes, twine, car parts and low -
dust livestock bedding; Kenex, a
company that grows and processes
hemp fibre in Kent County;
Hempline from Delaware, Ont.; and
the Spirit Stream Trading Co. of
Hamilton, which produces a line of
cosmetics and hemp jeans. The Ag
