shares. There are 60-65 non-farm
members who have invested in the
company. Another 20-25 farmers
have invested in the hopes of
shipping milk, and pay according to
the volume they want to ship. As
well there are non-voting members
who just want to be a part of the
company and invest $100 to be
members. The company has also
looked ahead and provided a share
category for producers of non -goat
dairy products.
"We still look for membership and
investment because it has taken a lot
of money to launch this business,"
Reid says.
The wide range of membership
brings a variety of skills to the table
at any board meeting, Reid says.
"There's a danger with so many
personalities and talents and careers
of (not) meshing together but I think
we've done pretty well as a board,"
Reid says. "I mean we don't agree on
everything but if you did there'd be
something wrong."
Some potential investors have
balked because they say co-ops
can't get along but Reid says
that hasn't been the experience with
Mornington.
"There's been some real, spirited
discussion on a few things but we
have enough in common with the
goal of establishing a plant and
bettering the industry and those
major things we're all in agreement
on."
The Cooks got involved in the co-
op after they talked to Lindner and
Reid while researching the potential
of a goat dairy and decided to make
the switch, gutting their barn and
renovating it to hold their current
herd of 160 goats (70 milking at
present).
Linder had told them about the
potential of a new co-operative
starting.
"We'd never experienced
anything like that before, so we
thought 'why not'. We're starting a
whole new career so we might as
well do the whole enchilada," says
Tammy.
Bob and Linda Reid persuaded
Tammy to run for the board of
directors.
"I've never been in anything like
that," Tammy says. "It's a good
experience. People's approach to
solving problems is different."0
