a building — that's the most visible,
you can see that — but it's going to
take us some steps to get there.
Doing that right off the bat to satisfy
that need might be the end of us."
In another case of co-operation,
the co-op has an agreement with Pine
River Cheese Co-operative of Ripley
for distribution of Mornington's
cheese through Pine River's
extensive distribution system.
"I'll be going out with their sales
manager and making some calls and
introducing our product and telling
(retailers) why they should be
stocking Mornington cheese on their
shelves and what the sales angle must
be to interest their customers,"
Lindner says.
indner credits consultant
George Alkalay for the
Jpartnership with Quality Jersey
Products. Alkalay, has helped many
new generation co-ops get started
including both Mornington and
Quality Jersey
"He's very good at networking,
very good at knowing what that other
partner might need to make it work
for them as well," Lindner says.
One of Alkalay's qualities was to
be patient enough to let the co-op
members stub their toes in their
desire to be independent, before
they'd be ready to listen to his
suggestions for co-operative ways to
accomplish their goals.
Consultants like Alkalay may
seem expensive for a group just
getting started but they can help
guide supporters through the tough
times. The average person might
come up with a good idea for a
product they think will sell but
there's a mountain of paperwork and
red tape to be scaled and they don't
know how to do it, Lindner says.
Producers haven't any idea how
long it can, take to make things
happen. Take the case of the
company's logo for example. The
very first logo was createdquickly by
Reid's wife Linda and produced by a
printer in New Hamburg when a
label was needed for some of the first
cheese produced. The original
symbol of a rising sun has been
retained in the latest, professionally
designed label but between
negotiations with designers, changes
and improvements and final printing,
time dragged on for more than a
