of the Ontario industry for handling
larger volumes in an environmentally
safe manner.
The Farm Environmental
Coalition has long advocated at (east
240 -day manure storage capacity but
the reality. Verkley says. is that most
new Karns are being built with 365 -
day storage capacity to give greater
flexibility.
But the challenge for Ontario
farmers is to be environmentally
friendly at the sarne time as
competing in a global market. he
says. "If we were to see the kind of
regulations that would hurt an
industry like the hog industry that's
dependent on international markets,
we have done ourselves no favours.
But to develop a sustainable hog
industry that can export
competitively. that's the goal for
everybody.

If you can get good barns that
allow you to put in good genetics,
good feed you can get the kind of
productivity gains that allow you to
pay for the more expensive barn

Even the landscaping around the
new barns shows Ontario producers
have a justified pride in their
operations, Verkley says.
But this leading nature of
Ontario's livestock farms also poses
one of the great challenges in coming
years, he says. Many of the owners of
these new facilities are heavily
leveraged. "There's a major financial
stake out there in the different
sectors. One just hopes that we see
the kind of pricing in our
commodities that allows this all to be
