The Rural Voice, 2001-07, Page 21David and Carolyn Biesenthal,
whose pasture field was near the
infected well, had done a nutrient
management plan allowed supporters
to show that the environment was
considered by the farmer. NMPs
have always been a part of the
Environmental Farm Plan, just going
one step further, Verkley says. "Just
good basic farming practices are
what we built on," he says.
While the public was panicked,
the media has been filled with stories
about the dangers of "industrial"
farming and opponents of large-scale
livestock have been given new
ammunition since Walkerton,
Verkley remains•firmly optimistic
about the current state of agriculture.
"The way new barns are being
built, they're being built with an
environmental .component attached.
It's just a given that the animals
require a very high level of comfort
and management as the facilities get
bigger. If you're going to try to apply
the same attention and care you did
50 years ago to a barn with 1,200 or
2,500 sows in it, you would run into

problems pretty quickly. These barns
are not a 'we'll do the chores when
we get around to it' (operations)
anymore — these chores are getting
done, well done, every day. On the
bigger operation there's a real
intensity of day-to-day management.
"The other thing is that the whole
design and construction of these
barns is revolving around things like
manure. The amount of manure that
is being handled in a big barn, we
would have just been choked up with
this stuff 30-40 years ago — we
didn't have the equipment to handle
it. We didn't have the technology to
get it on the field."
Ontario's early adoption of liquid
manure has led to the development of
some of the leading manufacturers of
liquid manure handling equipment in
the world, using technology that was
developed in Ontario, Verkley points
out. Those companies have grown
and expanded in relation to the needs
