programs," Verkley remembers.
Verkley's road to being in the eye
of the storm over environmental
issues began after he served -a term as
president of the Perth County
Federation of Agriculture and was
elected to the board of the Ontario
Federation. During Donna
Stewardson's term as president he
was invited to join the OFA's
environment committee.
From there he became involved in
the Ontario Farm Environmental
Coalition when Roger George was
OFA president.
"That really was the vehicle that
got me into a lot of the big
environmental issues," he recalls.
The first step was the Farm
Environmental Agenda which

whole development of the
Environmental Farm Plan."
That basis, of looking at the
individual farm, has been at the
centre of all the environmental
thinking on the part of the farm
groups since, Verkley says. "In
anything we do about environmental
issues and farming, that has remained
the key centre point: we always start
off with `what's the impact on that
original farm', because that's where
all the good things happen and that's
where all the bad things happen.
"It doesn't matter what watershed
you're in, it doesn't matter what
commodity you're in, whether you're
using manure or commercial
fertilizer: everybody has an impact
on the environment," he says.
Given that conclusion, the natural
starting point for the plan of attack
needed to be educational in nature.
"Because the solution will be farm
based, who better than the individual
farmer to do that. So that was a
