The vigilantes lit the Donnelly
homestead on fire and headed down
the road to William Donnellys'.
They must have lost some nerve
because once they reached William's
they waited outside and called for
him to come out. But his brother
John, who was spending the night,
answered the door instead of William
and was shot. Thinking they had
killed William, the vigilantes
dispersed, leaving three men and two
woman dead.
No one was ever convicted of the
murders.
Now,
121 years after the
murders the haunting story of
Donnellys makes them more
popular than the day they died. They
are a hot commodity.
The Blyth Festival show hopes to
sell-out every show, meaning 5600
people would see it over the two and
a half week run from June 14 to July
1.
Actor Coates says peopI are in for
a surprise. The recreation of the
story, with horses, stage coaches and
actors reliving the Donnelly days,
will be told from as many angles as
possible.
"We'll see those peripheral stories
that don't always occur to people,"
Coates said.
Lucan opened the Lucan Area
Heritage Museum in 1995 largely to
"cash in on the Donnellys," president
Hodgins said. She says the goal is to
get people to stop in Lucan and get
them to buy from some of the other
businesses in town.
When Coates went to Lucan to do
research he found people were quite
willing to talk about the Donnellys.
"It's another generation removed
now," he says. "Generally there are
very few people around there that
have contact with first hand accounts
of the story anymore".
Hodgins thinks people continue to
be interested in the Donnelly story
because they don't understand how
such a horrendous thing could
happen.
"It's the mystery of the whole
thing," Hodgins said in a phone
interview.
At five dollars each, Patti Miller
has sold about 1,500 copies of her
Donnelly -inspired novel. Her book,
The End of the Roman Line, is
