Ontario Veterinary Medical Association fact sheet for farmers
FMD is a highly contagious disease
that affects swine, cattle, sheep, goats,
deer, elk. and other cloven hoofed
animals. The disease can be spread by
contact through contaminated animal
products and through the air. People
can carry the virus on their clothing and
shoes, and in their nasal passages.
Symptoms: What to Look For:
• Unfortunately, animals infected with
FMD are contagious before the telltale
blisters, lameness and "slavering"
appear.
• Animals with FMD may suffer from
fever, depression, loss of appetite
and/or a significant loss of milk
production. Clinical signs include
blister-like lesions or "vesicles". The
blisters appear on the nose, tongue,
lips, between the hooves, above. the
hooves and on teats. Foot lesions can
cause lameness. Painful blisters in the
mouth can cause extensive drooling or
"slavering".
If you notice any of these
symptoms, call your veterinarian
immediately.
Suspected cases of FMD must be
reported to the Canadian Food
Inspection Agency (CFIA).
Take Proper Precautions:
Visitors:
• Ensure that visitors to your farm do
not come in contact with livestock,
equipment or feed.
• All visitors to your farm should use
clean, disinfected footwear.
• Provide rubber boots, coveralls, and
hats for your visitors.
• CFIA recommends a two per cent
solution of Virkon for disinfecting such
items as footwear and equipment. (To
make a two per cent solution, mix 20
grams of Virkon powder per litre of
water. Contact time is 10 minutes.
Virkon is available at most farm supply
stores.)
• Refuse entry to anyone who has,
during the previous 14 days, visited a
country that has experienced a recent
outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease.
If You are Travelling:
