guarantee a farmer a market for his
product. The farmers also has a
responsibility to deliver that product,
however, because the company must
be able to meet its needs. Often there
are penalties for producers who do
not meet their obligations to supply a
set amount of product.
Because the company has
commitments from producers to
supply product, it can build to meet
100 per cent capacity utilization.
Because of the close ties between the
producer and the processor, there are
better abilities to manage the quality
of the product, LeCureux said.
New -generation co-ops have
shown some spectacular successes in
the U.S. Dakota Growers Pasta was
founded by 1,080 growers in 1992
and is now the third largest pasta
producer in the U.S. Participation has
allowed growers a value-added
dividend of $1.58 per bushel on their
wheat.
Jn 1995, 4,200 farmers anteed up
$200 each and hired a chief
executive officer and began
United Spring Wheat Growers. In
1996, 3200 of them made the next
step investment of $4,800 for
feasibility and market studies and in
1997 the company announced it was
building a frozen sourdough plant,
not in their home area of the
midwest, but in Georgia, in the heart
of the market for dough.
To make a co-op venture succeed,
farmers must focus on what
customers want, when they want it
and how they want it. One of the
problems LeCureux has run into is
that farmers want the co-op to market
what they produce rather than
producing what the market wants. He
related the story of a survey carried
out for Thum Oilseed Producer's Co-
operative of Ubly, Michigan which
he has been involved with. A survey
of potential buyers showed they
wanted non -genetically -altered
soybean oil but some members
wanted to grow GMO soybeans. He
had to tell them they had a choice of
producing what the buyers wanted or
not selling their beans.
To discover market opportunities,

consumer, he advised. Food safety is
a major consumer concern so in
France, for instance, one company
