The Rural Voice, 2001-04, Page 35composted manure nourishes the soil
and not just the plant. While compost
puts nutrients in the soil in a stable
form, mineral fertilizers create
"luxury" nutrient uptakes giving
plants more nutrients than they need.
There's less lodging of grain on
fields treated long term with
composted manure, he says.
Fleming says some of the research
surrounding the Ridgetown project
has demonstrated that the
mineralization rate of composted
manure into the soil seems better
than solid manure. There's more
nitrogen available in the soil for the
crop to use.
So how does this miracle of
composting come about? There
are three phases to the
composting process, according to
Cornell University's Science and
Engineering department.
I. The mesophilic, or moderate -
temperature phase lasts a couple of
days. A group of microorganisms
specific to this phase of
decomposition are active during this
phase. These organisms, including
bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes,

snails, slugs, earthworms, millipedes,
sowbugs and whiteworms
(depending on the type of material
being composted) break down the
organic residues. The tunneling of
larger worms and bugs brings oxygen
in to help the process of breaking
down the material. Fungi break down
tough debris, enabling bacteria to
continue the decomposition process
once most of the cellulose has been
exhausted.
Bacteria are the smallest living
organisms and the most numerous in
compost. They make up 80-90 per
cent of the billions of
microorganisms typically found in a
gram of compost. Bacteria are
responsible for most of the
decomposition and heat generation in
compost. They are the most
nutritionally diverse group of
compost organisms, using a broad
range of enzymes to chemically
break down a variety of organic
