osteoporosis. The U.S. Food and
Drug Administration has even
approved packaging claims on soy
products regarding their ability to
help reduce the risk of heart disease.
"That means to me we are in the
right niche," Huzevka said. "We
have the qualifications to be a major
supplier of food -grade soybeans."
But to win Japanese customers
it's essential to convince them
there is a quality control,
identity preserved system in place
that allows a crop to be traced right
from planting to delivery. Huzevka's
job will be to reassure buyers of the
integrity of the system Hensall Co-op
operates.
He explained the Co-op's system
which begins with keeping records of
the certified seed used for food grade
beans and an IP contract between the
Co-op and the producer. All this
information is kept in computerized
records.
Once the seed is in the ground
there are crop scouting reports on
seed emergence rates and planting
conditions. The scout will look at
risks of possible cross -contamination
from nearby crops. Even weeds are
identified for the buyer.
"The Japanese are
information -
driven people"
"We give them crop updates and
e-mail pictures of the crop," Huzevka
explains. "The Japanese are an
information -driven people."
When crops are harvested and
brought to the plant, tests are done to
make sure no genetically -altered
varieties are included.
"We don't want to fill a silo if
there is a possibility of contamination
from one load," he said.
Hensall Co-op has installed a
cleaning system to make sure the
product is as clean as possible. "We
have to find ways to make sure we
give a pure product," Huzevka
explains.
First the beans go through a
cleaner and sizer which selects beans
of the proper size and gets rid of
some of the contaminants. Next it's
on to a gravity separator which
works on density to get rid of stones.
