The Rural Voice, 2001-01, Page 31road to keep them here. Giant
horseflies, called bulldogs, drive the
cattle crazy. I ride one of the horses
down the road and see a mother and
two baby otters swimming in the
ditch.
August 13 — Cold and wet. I'm
almost tempted to get the wood stove
going in August! The cattle get into
our garden eat the corn and peas and
beans, and the tops off the carrots and
beets. A big cow moose steps out of
the bush onto the side of the road in
front of the Jeep. We follow her
galloping down the road about a
quarter mile before. she runs off into
the bush.
September 7 — I make the last
blueberry pie.
November 4 — Donald walks up the
river bank and sees lots of ducks and

the house, he sees a moose walking
across the road below the bush. He
rushes in for the gun, drives down
and shoots it — a big bull with a
beautiful rack. He bleeds it, and
leaves it in the bush to cool. Back at
the house, a doe and two fawns are
grazing in the field across the road.

We spend the next two days
cutting and wrapping meat, and I will
The adventure comes to

varnish and mount the antlers.
Well, all good things must come to
an end. The renovation work is
mostly finished, but the thought of
another long, hard, cold winter is just
too much. Both sets of grandparents
are getting older, and the children
deserve to spend time with them.
While the schools here are adequate,
we feel the children would be better
served in a challenging atmosphere,
closer to potential universities.
It's been a great adventure, and
we're older, wiser, and ready to go on
to the next challenge.0
