moose jerky. It is very delicious,
tender, and nicer than beef, with lots
of flavour. Incredibly lucky for a shot
in the dark.
January 15 - I must touch wood, but
we have yet to be sick since we've
come here. Maybe it's the cold, clear
air, or the isolation from bugs. The
view from the kitchen window is a
winter wonderland, but the clothes
are frozen stiff on the clothesline.
January 18 - Three more moose walk
across the front field. They stay close
to the bush, then cross the river, and
buck around, playing.
January 19 - Today is -37°F with
wind chill of -63°F, so it's easy to see
why people stay at home. We thought
maybe they were all hermits.
January 30'- We now have three
cows and three calves. They're not
enough to keep the barn warm, but
are out of the cold wind. It's handy to
have a milk cow so as not to have to
drive to town for milk. Donald fires
up a propane blow torch under the
Jeep's oil pan so the oil is thawed
enough to flow on really cold days.
February 10 - We wake the kids in
the night to see the spectacular
northern lights from the window at
the stair landing.
March 8 - -2°C today, and we are
counting the days we'll be able to
keep the freezer going outside. It is a
wooden box Tined with styrofoam, set
in the shade on the back deck. Now
that the snow is not as deep, the
septic tank froze, so we're back to
using a 5 -gallon pail. I still haven't
got kitchen taps or drain.
March 28 - The freezer finally quit. 1
can still keep things cool out in the
box, but not reliably frozen. We take
the frozen food to a neighbour who
has hydro and extra room in his
freezer. He's an old-timer, pleased he
