It made me think of the early pioneers who had to deal with such trees when they arrived in their new country. Just imagine to have been allotted a plot of ground to build a farm on and to arrive only to find it covered with giant elm, maple, beech or other hardwood trees. Imagine the many who had never handled an axe in their lives except possibly to cut some kindling for the stove. Imagine them standing there, watched by their wives, not knowing where to begin cutting. The wood was hard and had a tendency to make the axe bounce off, with the danger that the blade would slice into their leg — not an unusual happening. Some are reported to have bled to death leaving their family, especially if it happened in winter, unprotected. This article should make those whose forefathers settled here, proud to come from such hardy stock.0 – Adrian Vos, Blyth (who came here after the trees had been cut) Now you can reach us by e-mail Contact us at: norhuron@scsinternet.com or write to us the good old-fashioned way at: The Rural Voice, P.O.
