Funeral service will be held today (Thursday), at 2 p.m., from the Heinbeck funeral home in Stratford. Interment in Stratford Cemetery. cagerai At one time the English cele- brated the Twelve Days of Christmas with playful sports— jumping in sacks, bobbing for apples, drinking great quanti- ties of hot cider. Today, all that remains of the twelve -day observance, perhaps, is the superstition that all decorations should be re- moved by Twelfth Night to prevent bad luck in the coming New Year. Carol singing is a favorite custom in Britain and at the mid -night services they are sung to herald the birth of Christ. In the same manner as American youngsters, British children hang their stockings from the mantles or on the ends of their beds on Christmas Eve. They also write to Father Christmas (the British Santa) to inform him of their Christmas wishes. Statues Honored In Italy the Presepio, or crib, is as characteristic of Christ- mas as is the tree in other countries. To the Presepio, people bring gifts of nuts and apples, which they place in the hands of life-sized figures, BUY THE BEST ROBB'S CHRISTMAS TREE FARM 1/2 anile south of Clifford on Highway 9 WHOLESALE and RETAIL Phone Clifford 221J1 16-13-20b William S. No. 175-C-62 Jny3rrb There's a Saint For Toothache! Modem dental science is barely 100 years old, but the first dentists were Babylonians of 5,000 13.C. who used herbs to "cure the devil thatcauseth toothache." Their favourites were cloves or cinnamon, placed in a cav- ity of the aching tooth in an effort to bring relief. A primitive form of tooth- brush was used by the people of India in 500 B.C. In London, in 1376, the Dentists' Guild was formed and lasted for 437 years. During the nineteenth cen- tury, British people became very teeth -conscious and many types of powders were adver- tised for cleaning and keeping molars white, and the mouth sweet. Toothbrushes, as we know them, are only about 200 years old. They were originally made from the bristles of wild boars. The Patron Saint of Tooth- ache is St. Appollonia, who was martyred in Alexandria in 248 A.D. Among the tortures she endured before being burnt at the stake, was the crude ex- traction of her teeth by pulling, breaking and knocking them out. Her special day is Feb- ruary 9. So if you have to see your dentist... Eskimos get very little den- tal trouble; nor Indians, who keep to a strict, vegetarian diet, or Australian aborigines. But, once they change over to the type of foods we eat, dental decay results. African natives visiting Great Britain invariably avoid sweet -stuffs and maintain their regular use of tooth -picks to keep their teeth gleaming white. Healthy teeth are well used. And bite -power varies consider- ably onsiderably from one nation to anothe An Eskimo exerts 345 pounds pressure when he masticates the raw fish and fat, which form part of his diet, and also when he chews leather to make it supple enough for use as harness or lacings for his clothe Our biting power is only around 171 pounds because we are used to soft, slushy foods. Chewing hard foods stimu- lates the blood to the gums, keeping them and the teeth healthy. It also helps to clean them by removing acids and other harmful deposits. Yule Riddle Links Santa, Pawnshops What is the connection be- tween Santa Claus, the custom of hanging up Christmas stockings, and a pawnbroker's sign of three gold -colored balls? A Scrooge might say that the answer to the Yuletide riddle is that Santa Claus would need help from a pawn- broker, to pay for filling all the stockings — but Scrooge would be wrong. Both Christmas stockings and pawnbrokers' signs are traditions that conte from legends about the first "Santa Claus" — St. Nicholas., bishop of Myra, in Asia Minor — ac- cording to the Encyclopedia Americana. This early Santa was known far and wide for his generos- ity. And, so the story goes, he wanted to help a merchant who had lost all his money and had no way to provide dowries for the marriages of his three daughters. Like Santa today, St. Nicho- las wanted to be a generous but secret giver. When the oldest daughter was old en- ough to marry, he went at night to the merchant's house, with a bag of gold. Some legends say he threw it through the window, and others that he threw it down the chimney. At any rate, the oldest daughter had her dowry and was able to marry. St. Nicholas repeated the process for the second, and then the third, daughter. The third time, the merchant watched to see who brought the gold and told the story of the good saint's generosity. According to legend, o of gold fell into a st hung up by the china dry, and thus began th tom of hanging up sto to be filled with gifts.
