SHOW
BIZ
By
September 26 . October 8
It was a real treat to see Eddie
Fisher back where he belongs, on
a stage entertaining an audience.
After four years of being little
more than a slave to Elizabeth
Taylor, and limiting his singing
to little. more than the shower, 1u•
has returned to America and his
old homeland has taken him back
into its heart, Although he is
merely a shadow of his former soli
and his eyes still mirror the strain
of the past year, he is singing bet
ter than ever. even though tin
lyrics of every song seem to have
a tragic meaning for him. He
opened this week on Broadway
which more than anything els&
should tell us that he is back 01
the ladder to success and close ti.
the top. I only hope that he re
mains a singing star, and doesn't
return to his role as a toad at tht
hands of La Taylor!

Here's an item I ran across last
week that may interest you. "The
Real. McCoys', have started an
other series for an American net
work, but the show's format is un-
dergoing many changes. Kathy No -
Ian, the young actress who plays
'Kate' in the present series, is
tired of being typed the country
'hog -stopper', and is leaving the
cast to play a much more glamor-
ous role in a new series. This
leaves 'Big Luke' without a wife,
and since the network figured Miss
Nolan couldn't be replaced, be is
now a widower. Walter Brennan
will be back as 'Grandpa' but his
appearances will be fewer than in
the past. Just when these changes
will hit Canada is hard to say, but
at least you're forewarned.

"My Fair Lady" closed on Broial-
' way last Saturday night, It must
have been like saying goodbye to
an old friend, for this play has
been lighting up the same theatre
since March 15, 19513 making it at
2,711 performances, the longest
running musical in theatrical his -1
tory. A modern-day version ol•1
George Bernard Shaw's "Pygma-
lion" about the transformation of
an aneducated, cockney flower girl
it first starred Julie Andrew's And
Rex Harrison. Since then, a num-
ber of other stars have taken the
lead roles, Its music was by Ler-
ner and Loewe, and contained such
all-time hits as "I Could Have•
Danced All Night", "The Street
Where You Live", "A Little Bit of
Luck" and many others. Warner
Bros, in Hollywood are now, at a
cost of many millions of dollars.
going to make a movie version
with Audrey Hepburn and Cary
Grant in the lead rules.

Another theatrical group bit the
dust on Saturday night. this time
the Canadian Shakespearean play-
er's who closed up shop at Strut
ford after three months, 123 per-
formances and many thousands ut
dollars, With a very good choice of
plays and an excellent choice of
star in ('hristophet' Plummer, they
flourished in their best season to
date, On "Front Page Challenge"
last weep Mr, Plummer disclosed
that he had been asked to return
next year, bot had not accept, -:1
the offer. Stratford should "beg"
hint to come back; his name means
packed houses every night of the
week. He has left now for New
York, where in early December he
will repeat iris famous "Cyrano"
in a television play, opposite Hope
Lange. Gordon Sinclair•'s terse
question, "Why wasn't Toby Rob
ins asked to play her old rule?"
still remains unanswered.

A current movie Which you
should not miss Is the great musi-
cal, "The Music Man". Yours truly
saw it in the big city during its
long run there and it is about the
must tremendous picture ever made
in my estimation. It is the story of
a travelling salesman who takes
advantage of small town folk by
making them believe be will organ.
ize a boys' band when he actually
doesn't know one note of mask
from another. Robert Preston
stars in the title role and is simply
the greatest! Supporting hire are
Shirley Jones, Hermione Gingobt.
