UMPIRES The umpiring in the two soft- ball games played by the Wingham Goodyears and Orangeville in the WOAA finals, has featured the husband and wife team of Sade! Widmeyer behind the plate and his wife, Wilda, on the bases. The latter is the only lady umpire registered with the Ontario Ama- teur Softball Association. She wears the regulation umpire's uni- form and the players say hardly anyone notices the difference until startled by a feminine voice calling the "safes" and "outs". Wilda was the catcher, some years back, for the famous Clifford Swingskirts, the all -girl team that took et batful of championships. She and her husband "Sade" now reside in Fergus. BY Vonni Lee Review Sept-, 19-26 The Judy Garland Show, which was repeated last week onCBC-TV Was the hest show of the year for Canadian viewers. Originally seer. on February 25th of this year, ft was one of the shows naminatec in the "best show" category at the Emmy Awards' function, but wa, defeated by an American dramatic effort, "Victoria Regina". Yours truly saw the first showing, and enjoyed every minute of it. Sur- prisingly enough, I sat through the entire thing again' this 'rounc and enjoyed it just as much, Miss Garland is one of the greatest per formers in the world, without doubt, and her two guests, Frani. Sinatra and Dean Martin added to the greatness of the show, On17 stars of their stature could malts a success of a show wherein such tittle scenery and costuming is pro vided. Her renditions of old song: like "The Man that Got Away" "Over the Rainbow", "The Trolley Song", and the tremendous "San Francisco", were so packed with emotion, that there surely was not a dry eye in the theatre when she finished. It was rather ironical that at the very time we were viewing the show, Judy's trouble - filled personal life was yielding her still more trouble. She was in a hospital in Las Vegas, suffering from what some thought to be an- other overdose of sleeping pills. Her reason for being in Nevada: a six -weeks' residence, necessary for divorce :proceedings from husband Sid Luft. It is a shame that she hasn't been able to carry the suc- cess of her professional life into her private life! By the way, her show was produced by a. Canadian, Norman Jewison, We should be very proud of him, eh what? 0-n_n "A Summer Night" in its last show of the season last Friday evening, turned out to be The Shirley Harmer Show, without a doubt, I, for one, am very sad to see it leave us, Not only has Shir- ley's great voice kept the series alive, but she has also become al- most a fashion plate with her beautiful wardrobe, The entire half hour, with the exception of a few minutes with guest Peter Nero, was devoted completely to her in her last show, and she sang her old theme song for the first time on television since her return. The lyrics in one of her production .numbers were by her husband, Al- an Bertram, a most talented writer. 0-0-0 The wee fellow on "Yes, Yes, Na- nette" had goad reason for calling Nanette Fabray "mummy", In real life he is her own son, Jamie, the son of Nanette and her producer husband, Ranold McDougall. And speaking of her show, does the teenager who plays her son Buddy ring a bell with you as being mas- ter of a gorgeous black horse named "Fury", on a show by the same name a few years ago? He should . , .. same kid! The name is Bobby Diamond and he used to be one of Hollywood's finest child actors, Now he's a young man and starting an even newer series. 0-0-0 The last show of the popular summer replacement, "Talent Scouts" was seen on an American station a couple of weeks ago. It had ended a week previous on the CBC, so I was curious to see what would 'be said about its return. Seems many favorable reports had flooded into the studios in New York and host Jim Backus said they may be back "very soon", This is great hews, for anyone like me anyway, for I thought it was summer replacement of the best p the year and atrenmdous chance for our young talent, Oh, yes, and don't forget to watch for some of the new faces on Ed Sullivan's fall Season! 11.0.0 By the way, where was the "cast of millions" on the special barn dance on Tuesday night? Were, they all crawling around in the bales of hay? Just askin't 0!0.0 A lot of changes Have been made through the summer, %t'or instance, brunette Brenda Allen has return- ed to "Western Roundup" as a blondes I can't really say it's an improvement, but then again, i can't really say 11 isn't either! u This week sees the return of afternoon programming to Can nes 8, also the return of old series, "The Don Messer Show", "Danny Thomas", "Festival", "Playda' and "Juliette". "Sports Unlimited" replaces the late King Whyte on Saturday nights, 0-0-0 Let's talk about records.
