Running Show Junior gliding across the Ice on his first pair of skates, the dog frolicking in the snow, .Johnny trying out his toboggan -you've caught these and a host of other pictures in recent weeks. And now it's time to show your color slides to friends and family. But check before you project, With a bit of planning and care your audience enjoyment of your slides will be greatly increased, First, inspect every slide. Pull out the "misses", the over or ander exposed shots, and the pictures that didn't "come off" in terms of color and content. Arrange the slides In a logical, interesting order. Filing them in series to tell a story will provide a far more enjoyable show than a grab-bag of unrelated pictures, Besides giving your audience a sense of continuity, it will help you with the running commentary. Once you've decided on the order and placed the slides in a box. draw a diagonal line across the tops. That way, you can tell at a glance if the slides are in sequence for showing. To avoid having your slides ap pear on the screen upside down, or reversed, glue a little tab to the upper right-hand corner. Or, if you prefer, mark the corner with a circle containing an "X". The mark can be seen clearly, even in dim light, and eliminates mistakes dur- ing projection. Inspect your slides for dirt and marks, Remember that a tiny spot of dust can loom as large as an elephant fly when projected on the average home screen. For dirt and lint, use a clean, dry, camel's hair brush, For fingerprints, breathe lightly on the side and wipe with a soft cloth or wad of absorbent cot- ton. Once the slides are spic and span we would recommend you keep them in file boxes available from yotir photographic dealer, Yoa might also mount your better slides between two pieces of glass, sealed tightly with tape. Both methods help you protect your slides from dust and damage. When your friends arrive fur the show, check the projector before setting it up, Is the lens clean and free from dust? Is the bulb bright enough? Remember that a smooth beginning puts friends in the right mood, right from the start. Just one final tip: it's usually best to limit shows to 30 or 40 minutes. By keeping your show to a reasonable length, you can hold audience interest at a peak and have them anxious to see your next presentation. OF MANY THINGS By Ambrose Hills THE FAMILY It would •be a foolish father who would force each member of his family along precisely the same lines. The wise father tries instead to give each youngster a chance to develop his potential skills to the utmost, avoiding discrimination of any kind. To hold back an am- bitious child in favor of a slower one would be considered foolhardy. Most families operate sensibly, so that each member may develop fully. The young earner who saves most is allowed to keep his savings and use them in his own way and is not obliged to turn them over to his less frugal brother or sister. In other words, the normal penal- ties of life are allowed to operate side by side with the normal re- wards. In the happy family, a great meal of flexibility exists under a set of rules fair to all. A good father would not impede the suc- cess of one son in order to insure the success of another. Does this mean that there is no charity in family life? Not at all. In home after home, the more talented child will voluntarily as- sist a slower brother. This is true charity, because it is on a voluntary basis, and thus has great spiritual value. Pew public organizations can match the family unit for spiritual values. Families where there is a lack of love, compassion, generosi- ty, charity and innumerable other values, are rare indeed. Even a man who is a rotter in public life will display remarkable virtue in the interests of his family, even to the point of risking his life for them. The world will never go com- pletely to pot as lung as family life continues. If ever the family unit is destroyed, awl public authorities attempt to replace natural parents, civilization will be doomed, WAL ERTON 3 Plan on attending the 42nd BE GRAVE SCI -TOOL FAIR to be held WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 12th In Walkerton last Thursday eve- ning the Wingham Goodyear's took a three.ganu' lead in the best of seven WOAA play-offs, defeating Walkerton by a score of 6-3 in ten innings.
