In an article based on interviews with farm safety experts, the Re- view says that one in every four Canadian farm families will ex - Jones perience an accident this year. Farms are three times as danger- ous as the average factory, Ln On- tario alone in 1960 there were more than 7,800 farm accidents with medical bills totalling $701,000, property damage amounting to $5.2 million and a total of 112,493 work- ing days lost. One reason for the high farm accident rate Is that ----- unlike in- dustry --there is no way of super- vising farm safety practices, the Review says. For instance, child- ren are allowed to operate machin- ery designed for use of adults, Emotional upset, fatigue and farm. ers' contempt for danger resulting from constant exposure to poten- tially ,dangerous animals and ma- chinery are other prince causes of accidents on the farm, According to some safety experts interviewed by the Review, there are four needs in the fight for farm accident prevention: farm accidents happen In the barn- shift climbing devices claimed a yard, the Sesltatchewarr govern- good percentage of the victims. ment instituted an annual spring This cleanup campaign; re-1his points out the fa.ot that commended fenced -orf play ureas floor's, as well as stairways, bear` to keep children out of farmyards,- i 2 -A, rlatlontll voluntary Safety hrgardeation, 3 --.:Support and leadership by the Canadian government through health and agricultural depart- ments, 4----Provlslwn of safety education materials, films, TV and radio programs about safety education, Floors Often Cause Falls There were 826 deaths front home accidents in Ontario in 1960, and 358 of these people died because 1 -Detailed national accident they fell. Wax which is soft or smeary, rather than well dried and buffed, heightens the possibility of slipping, Loose tiles,• rugs with curled edges and small rugs account for many falls.
