LIFEIS PROVEN
ON OTHER PLANETS
Setentists have found proof that
there was and perhaps still is -
animal and plant life on another
planet, says the August issue of
Imperial Oil Review.
1•`our t!,S, scientists have examin.
eel meteorite fragments and foetid
hydrocarbons tmolecules composed
of hydrogen and carbon atoms)
similar to those found in living
matter on this earth, A Canadian
scientist, Dr. Prank Staplin, of Im-
periaal Oil's Calgary laboratories,
has also examined the fragments
and confirmed certain of the find-
ings.
In an article based on an inter-
view with one of the U.S. scientists,
Dr. Warren Meinschein of Esso Re-
search and Engineering, the Review
says that molecules found in living
things on earth show certain char-
acteristics, The hydrocarbons found
in the meteorite fragments show
tete: same characteristics over sev-
eral tests.
The U.S. scientists believe that
wherever the meteorites originated,
something lived, but do not know
specifically what sort of plant and
animal litwas.
nr a it
• Meteorites are thought to have
conte from the asteroid belt, a ring
of space between Mars and Jupiter,
where chunks of rock and metal,
some as big as Lake Ontario, move
endlessly, Some scientists believe
these fragments are from a. de-
molished planet, the Review says.
Initial studies were done on a
meteorite which fell at Orgneil,
France, in 1864 and has since been
preserved in a museum. Later
• studies have been made on meteor-
ite fragments -from other parts of
France, Kentucky, India and Af-
rica. One member of the U.S. team
found fossil remains of 25 different
organisms- some of which looked 1
like nothing ever seen on earth
before. SOME., for example. had
arms and segs coming Dot of a
hexagonal interior. Imperial's Dr.
Staphn discovered five or six addf-
' tonal epec•imerie, including what
seems to be cel: tissue. The Review
vont..nues.
However. vtliile Dr. Staple) agrees
that life probably does exist on an-
o:the•r planet. he is not fully con-
vinced that the meteorites examin-
ed cam:• from outer space, He sug- .
gests that, meteorites containing
hydrocarbons could have come from
the earth. having been flung out .
2nto.pa
eC and
returned. D
r Mein-
, :)n however. told the
that no known natural forge could
have placed a stone front the earth
in orbit, and that the metal eon-
: tents of the meteorites differ sig-
nificantly from those of matter
found on earth.
• "One thing is sure." the Review
eoncludes. "we are slowly but sure -
unravelling one of the great my-
steries in the history of mankind.'

number of automobile accidents
and fatalities compared to the same
period ie, 3961.
Prowinc'ial figures Indicate that
there have been 11:792 accidents
across the province compared to
10.970 in 1981. Some 283 fatal acci-

months of this year compared to
266 last year.
In District No. 8 of the Ontario
Provincial Police which eotnprises
Huron Wellington. Waterloo, Grey,
Bruce and Pertly Counties, 24 fatal
accidents occurred compared to 15
in the :corresponding period in. 1861.
Locally, Provincial Police have
