Assessor's Report
Shows Increase in
Huron's Valuation
Special to Advance -Times
fly H. E. Elliott
(lt)1)L,R1CH--Every. municipality
Iii t:lnron, rural and urban, has
lshown an increase in valuation
dewing the past year, raising the
. total by $892,082 to $62,394,798, coun-
ty assessor A. A. Alexander re-
ported to county council.
Wingham assessment is up $21,-
500 to $2,612,150; Tiirnherry's $20,-
494 to 31,696,976. That of Goderieh
has risen $158,140 to 36,612,475, On
this assessment the reeve. of the
town has two votes In county
council..
A schedule listing valuations of
defence department properties was
explained by Mr. Alexander.
In reply to a question by God-
erich Township reeve, Walter
Forbes, regarding taxes on the On-
tario Hospital to be opened next
fall, the assessor said, "I am afraid
we are not going to get too much.
There is a similar hospital at Or-
illia and one below St. Thomas, and
they pay taxes on the portion used
as residence fod doctor, caretaker,
etc., but unless there is some
change in policy I do not think
they are going to pay on the whole
building."
The clerk -treasurer' reported 'a
deficit of 317,138 in the highway
account, which he said would be
balanced out at end of the year
provided the committee keeps
within the remainder of its budget.
Operation in general account indi-
cated a surplus for the three
months of $8,723.
Mr. Berry indicated a provincial
grant "something less than before"
,on indigents, but it evidently would
cover all, so far as hospitalization

iNEW CANADIANS HAVE
MUCH TO CONTRiBUTE
The June meeting of the Wom-
en's Missionary Society of :St, And-
rew's Presbyterian Churelt opened
with a call to wershin and prayer
by the president, Mrs, W, Murchi.
son.
Mrs. George Day and Mrs. Hugh-
Gilmour
ughGilmour were in charge of the
program and the subject for study
was "Immigration and Port Worst",
It was pointed out that many of
the neweomei's to our country are
escaping from intolerable .eondi-
tions in their own lands, often from
eommunlsm---and they come to
Canada to seek a new life, a new
home, and liberty, They have
much to contribute „to our Caned -
Ian way of life with the arts and
skills they have brought from the
Old World, Some are already
well known as doctors, scientists,
musicians and authors.
It has been said 'that these im-
migrants are taking Canadians'
jobs and thus their presence is
aggravating the unemployment sit-
uation here. In many cases they
will do work that native-born Can-
adians refuse to do. Also, the Gor-
don Commission Report indicates
that this increased population will
give a boost to the Canadian ec-
onomy by their purchases of goods
and services.
The church must concern itself
with the spiritual welfare of these
people. This concern is in evidence
when port workers, under the
W.M.S., meet the incoming ships,
welcome the strangers to our shor-
es, and stay with them if neves,
sary until they are on the train
which is to take them to their des.
tination. Word is 'then sent to the
minister of the church nearest
them, and sometimes clothing and
furniture are supplied, as well as
help in learning a new language,
and adjusting to the ways of a new
land.
Mrs, Leslie Fortune gave a devo-
tional message on Christian love
and compassion. Prayers were of-
fered •by Miss Cora. Gilicinson, Mrs.
D. Rae and Mrs. T. A. Currie.
is concerned.
"The point I have brought to
attention of Mr, Cass (lvfinister of
Municipal Affairs) through our
member, Mr. MaeNaughton, is the
fact that we carry the hospitaliza-
tion account here and ,heave some-
thing like 90 on that list. What I
want to see is that we get reim-
bursed for having that group,
otherwise we will drop the group
(and charge all the costs against
the province, which does not sound
practical. The amount involved is
$3,000 a year, and there is no point
in having that coverage If they do
not consider that part of our ex-
pense; but that matter is under
consideration."
At the .opening, Warden Me-
Cutcheon welcomed the members
and commented that they should be
content to leave their farms with
a good rain making crops grow and
making money for them.
"Take all the time you need," he
advised; "we do not want to skim
any reports and if necessary will
sit an extra ,day."
