Deal Editor:
I wonder if you can spare it little
space in your paper to air a few of
my views On the proposed new cen-
tral school in Howlett,
Last spring the parents of the
pupils of S.S. No, 12, Culross
more school) held a meeting to dis-
cuss what could be done to over.,
come, the crowded conditions that
could be foreseen for the start of
the school year in September, 1061.
The people decided to ask for a
new two room school, R8 the pre-
sent building was fairly old, or for
a one -room addition to the present
school. They were told that the
latter is not being done, also that
no new two -room schools were be -
Ing built.
The next idea was to try for a
four -room school, To have a
school this large children from the
north-west corner of Howlett would
have to he included; also a few
from the three townships of Turn -
berry, Culross and Carrick. The
present school, being a union
school, takes in pupils from all four
of these townships. A visit was
paid to Mr,, Kinkead but he was
not in attend with this idea, He
already had plans on his desk for
the school which would take in the.
whole Township of Howick.
I read the questionnaire submit-
ted last week by Mr, Douglas and
Mr. Collins.
I would like to know why the
school or schools, must be built
on Highway 87, We have some'
good county roads, and there could
be many suitable places found,
I'm sure, whore several schools
could be built. Other new four -
room schools are being built in
Huron County and some of them,
at least, are not built on highways.
If the roads are good enough for
the pupils to travel over in a
bumpy bus twine a day, five clays
a week, surely they are good
enough for the inspector to travel
in a smooth -riding car,
As far as having two rooms of
each grade, so some can progress
faster, pupils have been for years.
and still are, being grouped as to
ability even in one room, the more
clever pupils being given extra
work.
We north-west corn -
e. of
live in th
er of the township. If our child-
ren were required to go to a school
in the centre of Howick they would
have to ride twelve miles to get
there, going by the shortest route,
and the bus docs not necessarily
go by the shortest route. I eon -
'not sec how a telephone at the
school can make the distance any
less.
