The ordinary dictionary meaning of monopoly is "the exclusive pos- session of the trade in some com- modity," What this eolum.nlst was doing was to extend this to include the exclusive services in some ac- tivity or trade. New York recently faced a milk strike, which meant that the people of New York could not get milk in the ordinary way because a group of men in a union'pr•evcnted the delivery o1' milk to retail stores and individuals. Tlhis surely is as couch a monopoly as if some corporation owned or controlled the entire supply. If a private com- pany had owned the supply it would have been subject to con. denotation in the courts .under the anti-trust laws of the United States and the bitter condem- nation of the capitalist responsible for withholding the supply Would Have reached new heights of scorn', ful eloquence. What Would the wrong for a private person tet do. is, under todays law and philosophy routine activity when 'brought about by a union organization. A great city like New York is particularly vuhu'rable to these ac- tivities. The milk strike affects people by the millions who never have seen a cow and would not know how to mills one if they did see one. People who for social or econo- mic reasons live many miles from their work cannot get along with- out transportation by the company that own the buses, but it is a mat- ter of routine to shut down when drivers of the buses are controlled by union leaders. The manager and owners Of a bus line cannot strike for higher fares, as they might he justified in doing ,but a bus driver can strike for higher wages and is not condemned or accused of monopolistic practice.- The ractice. The Printed Word. ,) IMED-WASN AUTOMATIC COIN LAUNDRY WINGHAM. 25c WASH SINGLE LOAD WASH 50c ' 3 LOADS DRY 10c Our SPEED QUEEN Automatic Washers give you the clean- est, whitest wash in town.
