Extra Appeal, Fran2e Subject
To pack "punch" into your pie..
tures, try framing your subject.
You can take good pictures sim-
ply by exposing. a roll of film. But
add a dash of imagination, and
your prints will take on an "extra
something" that core
mands akten..
tion.
For example, landscapes provide
some excellent photo possibilities
at this time of year. You could
have some reasonably attractive
photos by merely stepping out o
your oar, setting your camera ;ni
shooting from. whore you are at the
moment•
But, on the other hand, you ()odd
scout around. Perhaps you'll find
two branches which frame a beau
Wu) view. And you might decideto
to place a model between lin'
branches with his back to the
camera sa that the viewer is led
into the scenery. Now the photo
has been transformed from a run
tine shot of the countryside into
something artistic.
By fram.iug the landscape scene,
your photo takes on a sense of
depth, a third -dimensional effect.
Framing's great advantage is that
it provides emphasis. One feature
or a group of features stands out
unmistakably as the reason for the
photo. A "framed" photo has a
point—it means something.
Framing also draws interest for
other reasons. For example, it
gives the viewer a sense of com-
pleteness, a feeling that nothing
f morn could be done to complete
rI the picture.
Further, it focuses attention di-
rectly on the subject and prevents
the viewer's attention from wan-
dering. The framing makes it Basi.
er to produce n. finished print of 1
tap notch interest.
You can frame your picture with
a tree, a shrub, an outcropping of
rack. But you don't have to trek
into the country •for a frame. All
you need is a doorway, a fence, a
skyline, the pilings of a bridge, and
you can ttY I ti5 trickc with alma
st
any subject.

Order of St. John
Dates to Crusades
History is a funny and fasein.
acing thing. As this is "St, John
Month" in Ontario, some browsing•
in the history of the Order found
facts that read like fiction, For
instance, the hest Cypriot wine still
bears the name of "Commanderia"
given to it by the Knights of Mal-
ta in the Fifteenth Century, And
at the time of the first Elizabeth
some of the Priory buildings were
taken over and occupied by the
Master of Revels of the court. It
is very probable that the walls of
the Gate House, now known as St,
John's Gate and headquarters of
the Order echoed with the words
and arguments, the songs and po-
ems of Ben Johnson, Marlowe and
even Shakespeare himself.
Much. more could be told because
the Order of St, John has a history
that gods back to the Crusades,
and although the Knights of the
Order were fighting mon they
were also Hospitallers and never
in their long history have they
ever relinquished their work of
nursing the sick, aiding the injur-
ed, giving help in time of disaster
and instructing in first aid and
hone nursing.
In 150 towns and cities In On-
tario and throughout Western Can-
ada, 8,500 regular members are
ready to answer the roll for help
at any hour of the day or night. All
those people are volunteers, serving
without pay. In fact, no one has
ever been refused help and no one
has ever heen t'harged for these
services or the medication, medical
equipment, beds, blankets or stret-
chers that go with them.
