Blyth Tykes take Clinton by storm Outnumbered Players from the Milverton 4 Wheel Drives, struggle with a Crusader during last Saturday night’s game. The Crusaders came on strong during the second period scoring four goals to bring the score to 6-3. During the final period the Milverton team closed thegap by two goals. The final score was6-5 for the Crusaders. Sports Belgrave Tykes score season’s first win Blyth Novices win 8-3 over Wingham Blyth Novice A hockey team out-skated their northern neigh­ bours, Wingham last Thursday night by the score of 8 to 3, in an exhibition match. Wingham scored early in the game, but Blyth took control of the game with some offensive power. Michael Haggitt finished the game with a hat-trick and one assist. Darryl Bromley played a strong play adding two goals and three assists. Michael Courtney tallied 2 Blyth broombailers honoured for Two local broombailers were honoured for their long service to the game during the Goderich Broomball Cahllenge last week in Goderich. Elgin Pease and Jim Phelan were honoured as coach and player for the 8th Liners. In 1958 Mr. Pease bowed to peer pressure and decid­ ed to try the new game of broomball. He played in the old North Huron Broomball League which included teams from Brus­ sels, Wingham and Belgrave. He’s been involved in the game ever since. Jim Phelan, who was rewarded for 25 years of service, said there is Sparlings win crown in Goderich Sparlings, of the Blyth Broom­ ball League captured the “B” division championship at the God­ erich Broomball Challenge Decem­ ber 10. It was a hometown match as Sparlings edged Blyth Baintoneers by a 1-0 overtime count for the win. Sparlings captain Marg Anderson scored the game’s only goal at 16:10 of the first overtime period to secure the win. Marie Leeming was in net for the shut out. The ladies “A” division was won by Middlesex Red Barons over Mildmay Selection. The teams were evenly matched but goalie Justin Black wasn’t overworked as he picked up his first win in net. It was the first win of the season for Belgrave. On December 9, Belgrave Tykes visited Clinton and come home on the short end of a 5-2 count. Clinton opened the scoring be­ fore Tim Robinson tied the score for Belgrave. With two goals in the first period, one by Jeremy VanAmers­ foort and one by Matt Anderson, both unassisted, Blyth took an early lead. Blyth got two more in the second period, Nathan Shannon from David Ansley and Matt Anderson assisted by Jeremy VanAmersfoort and Joel Arthur. Then the boys got six more in the third, four by Jeremy VanAmersfoort, with Matt Anderson and Aaron Bakker pick­ ing up one each. Aaron Bakker also got four asissts in the third while Jeremy VanAmersfoort got one. Though Blyth kept Clinton in their end most of the game, Tyler Stewart played excellent in net when Clinton did threaten. The Tykes’ next game will be Saturday, Dec. 23 when they will host Belgrave in Blyth at 10 a.m. end of the first period. Clinton scored one in the second and two in the third to take the 5-2 win.
