Blyth man praised for quick action A Blyth man was credited by police for preventing what could have been a more serious accident on December 5, when a horse spooked, dragging a buggy carry ing three Old Order Mennonites into the side of his transport truck. Robert Brak, 35, of North St., Blyth, was hauling salt from Goder ich and was near highway 86 and Waterloo Regional Road 86 just west of Elmira when the incident occurred. The enclosed buggy pull ed out of a driveway on Regional Road 86 when the horse leaped in front of the truck. Mr. Brak jack-knifed the trailer into a snow- filled ditch but the horse continued, swinging the buggy into the back end. In a phone interview with Mr. Brak’s wife, Linda, she stated that her husband thought he had miss ed them but the back end of the trailer caught them. The impact ripped open the buggy and tore off the rear axle, leaving the splintered frame in the middle of the road. The three occupants of the buggy, Minerva Martin, 51, Lovina Martin, 70 and her husband, Owen, 74, all of RR 4, Elmira, were taken to K-W Hospital where they were listed in stable condition in the intensive care unit. Mrs. Brak says her husband’s company in Milton has been checking on the status of their condition and ac cording to the last report they are improving. Regional police Const. Perry Cort was quoted in the K-W Record, crediting Mr. Brak for his quick thinking. “He did a good job. He swerved just in time. He has to be given credit,’’ Cort said. UCW plans for new year On Monday, Dec. 11, the Blyth U.C. W. met at the home of Rev. and Mrs. Lorenzo Ramirez for their annual Christmas meeting. President June Peck opened the meeting and welcomed all present. Susan Howson conducted the wor ship on the theme “Preparing for Christmas’’. Featured during the worship was a beautiful solo “O Holy Night’’ sung by Grace Poore with Phyllis Boak at the piano. During the business a letter was read telling us of the Loatian family coming to the Goderich area. We will be helping to support them. The Executive for 1990-91 was installed by Rev. Ramirez. Presi dent June thanked all who gave the year end reports with special thanks going to the quilters for their work in quilting 29 quilts this year.
