Teddy Bears picnic Councillors shipped to mine with no pay Primary students at Brussels Public School have been working on a bear unit over the past few weeks which culminated lastFriday inaTeddy Bears’ Picnic. Pictured arefrom left: Katie Harrison, Christa Smith, Sarah Exel, and Jenny McKercher (and friends). Some Huron County Councillors have been sent to work in the salt mine, without pay no less. The issue came up in the report of the Road Committee at Huron County Council on Thursday. The road committee participated in a tour of the salt mine in Goderich on Nov. 21. The committee voted to pay members a half-day’s pay for the tour ($60). But Hullett Township Reeve Tom Cunningham objected to the desig nation of the tour as a committee meeting. “It seems we’re getting into some things that are social in nature,” he said. There are plenty of people who would love to have a tour of the salt mine, he said. “Here we are not only getting a tour of the mine but getting paid for it.” Recently, Reeve Cunningham said, he had attended the Huron County Soil and Crop Improvement Association meeting on behalf of the county but he had benefitted so much personally from the meeting he didn’t feel the county should pay him. It was taking it to the point of the ridiculous, he said, but he was wondering if councillors were going to want to be paid for going to the county council golf tournament soon. A vote was called on the issue but the outcome was inconclusive so Warden Dave Johnston called for a recorded vote. Goderich Reeve Harry Worsell attempted to speak in support of the pay for the meeting at that point but was ruled out of order by the Warden who said the vote was already in progress and the time for discus sion was past. The motion to pay the committee members for their tour was turned down decisively in a recorded vote. Reeve Worsell later complained that the rules of debate were changed. “It seems funny that we called for the vote,” he said, “when other times people are allowed to speak for 10 or 15 minutes.” Grey Twp. buys truck Belgrave to get boost from PRIDE Despite an increase of $50 to $60 on their yearly tax bill, residents of Belgrave voiced approval to the proposed PRIDE project and other village improvements at a public meeting held by Morris township in the Women’s Institute Hall in Belgrave. In less than an hour the 52 residents who attended the meet ing heard the proposal and re sponded positively. x. The proposed plan for 1990 includes paving for Jane, Hamil ton, McCrae, King and John Streets, Corbett Drive and Parker Drive; the re-construction of side walks on the south side of Brandon Street, on the -east side of John Street and on the south side of Jane Street. Also, to be completed in the coming year are renovations to the Women’s Institute Hall with im provements being made to the heating system, windows, insulat- tion and siding. Incorporated with the recon struction of highway 4 in 1992 will be the reconstruction of sidewalks from the United Co-operatives to Parker Drive. Morris Council finalized plans this past fall and sent them to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs for approval. Many of the improve ments are covered under the province’s Program for Renewal, Improvement, Development and Economic Revitalization (PRIDE). The total cost of the proposed projects amounts to $168,951 with $76,200 of that being spent on the PRIDE project. Half of the money for the PRIDE project will come from the province. Adding this to the other grants amounts to $110,524 in funded monies. The municpality’s share of the PRIDE project was included in their 1989 tax levy and came to $29,200 for the township of Morris. The balance of the total expenditure is $29,227, 40 per cent of which will be paid by Morris township. For the remaining 60 per cent Council proposed to set up a “special rate area” for Belgrave which would add an extra cost of $5,846.00 to Belgrave ratepayers for each year for three years. Chairman of the meeting and village resident Howard Morton explained that this would mean an increase of $50 or $60 on the tax bills. However, an additional grant of $18,000 from the Ministry of Energy for the Institute renova tions could be forthcoming. At Grey Township Council’s regular meeting on December 4, Council accepted the tender of J. L. McCutcheon Motors Ltd. for a 1990 4-wheel drive pick-up truck. The McCutcheon tender including trade-in amounted to $13,652.96 and was the lowest of the two tenders received. Council hired Keith White as the part-time snowplow operator for the 1989-1990 winter season. The month of January, 1990 was declared as “Crime Stoppers Month.” In other business, general accounts amounting to $338,844.82 road accounts amounting to $25,975.55 and drain accounts amounting to $19,082.15 were ap proved for payment. The next regular meeting of Council is scheduled for December 18 at 9:30 a.m. CELEBRATE WITH Can »i Grade LARGE VINE FROZEN UTILITY GRADE FOOD £~ |nrirrn~rn(FAVORITES! 1 Lr u L__________> u s—■ ■ ■ .
