Despite a strong offensive against the Zurich team, the “Sprouts” were defeated by a close 3-1 margin. Blyth Overloads win title for second year The Blyth Radford Overloads Oldtimers competed in the Mild- may Oldtimer Hockey Tournament this past weekend. The Overloads had won their division last year and were attempting to retain their title. However the pre-tournament favourite Markdale Oldtimers de­ feated the Overloads 4 to 2 in the opening game. Gary Courtney and Bryan Black scored the Blyth goals. The Overloads were now faced with having to win their next two games to have a chance to advance to the final. Wayne McDougall scored twice and Tom Black once as the Overloads downed the Walker­ ton Mavericks 3 to 1. The final game of the round robin play was against arch rivals Wingham Goodtimers. The Over­ loads needed a win to advance to the division final. Wayne McDou­ gall’s goal with 3:39 to play produced a 3 to 2 victory. Bruce Bromley and Gary Courtney also scored for Blyth. The final found the Overloads once again playing Markdale who had gone undefeated in earlier play. Blyth built up a 2 to 0 lead on goals by Bruce Howson and Gary Courtney. However Markdale fought back and tied the game forcing sudden death overtime. It looked as if neither team would score as both teams missed several good opportunities. Finally after eight and a half minutes of play Wayne McDougall picked up a loose puck at his blue line and passed off to Bruce Howson who raced down the left wing and beat the goaltending on a low 30 foot blast. Blyth had won the game 3 to 2 and the championship. Gary Courtney was selected tournament M.V.P. Sports Bulls beat Blackhawks, upset by Sailors The Brussels Jr C Bulls opened the second half of their 1989-90 season with a 9-5 decision Sunday afternoon over the hometown Walkerton Blackhawks. The Bulls specialty teams clicked for five powerplay and one shorthanded goal in the victory. Both clubs played scoreless hoc­ key for the opening 15 minutes of play before the Bulls notched three quick powerplay goals, two by Marty Rutledge and the game opener of Chris Johnson for a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes. Walkerton fought their way back into the game by simply out-hust­ ling the Bulls and scoring two early goals. Rutledge completed his hat- trick, again on the powerplay but Walkerton stayed alive with their third goal of the period with 29 seconds remaining on the clock. J. C. Hewitt scored seconds into the third period and Corey McKee netted two in 77 seconds for a 7-3 score. Ron Strome upped the lead to five goals with 10 minutes remaining but again Walkerton fought back with two quick tallies. Steve Fritz and Jason Kramer combined for a shorthanded goal to end the scoring summary, and send the Bulls home with their 10th win of the season. Corey McKee, shifted to centre for the contest, enjoyed a five point game while Rutledge scored the hat-trick. As well J.C. Hewitt returned from Brussels Pee Wees earn third shutout On Wednesday night the Brus­ sels Pee Wees travelled to Hensall for the first match-up of the year. Andy Overholt earned his third shut-out of the season as Brussels won 3-0. Doug Wilson scored the first goal from Ryan Finch. There was no scoring in the second period. Matt Lee was fed a pass from Pete Gusso to put Brussels up two goals. While Brussels spent most of the third period shorthanded Matt Lee gave a perfect pass to Randy Beuermann who had three Hensall players in pursuit and still managed to score. On Friday night Zurich provided injury to enjoy an excellent game on left wing and was especially effective on manpower advantages while Joe Walker set up three goals and handed out several punishing checks. Murray Foxton imporved his record to 7-3-2 with the win in net. Friday night the Bulls blew a three-goal lead and lost for the second time this season to the Goderich Sailors by a 7-4 score on the lakefront. Brussels started quickly as Jason Kramer and Steven Vandendool gave*the Juniors a 2-0 lead in the opening minutes of play. Goderich replied with a goal of their own before an unassisted effort by Rutledge sent the Bulls to the dressing room with a 3-1 lead. Steve Fritz increased the lead to 4-1 minutes into the second period on passes from Bevin Flett and Andrew Henderson. Goderich tall­ ied twice midway through the game then fired four unanswered goals in the third for the Bulls fourth loss of the season. Jeff Roy suffered his first loss in goal for Brussels. The Bulls enjoy a three-game mini-home stand starting tonight (Wednesday) at 9 p.m. against the Mount Forest Patriots. Saturday night the Goderich Sailors return for an 8:30 start and Sunday the Bulls play their usual afternoon game, this week vs. the Grand Valley Harvesters at 2 p.m. the opposition. Brussels boys came up with a good effort for a 7-2 win. Matt Lee and Tim Machan had two goals each. Brad Mulvey, Dave Lewington and Doug Wilson had singles. In the assist department Dave Lewington had two, with singles to Pete Gusso, Tim Mach­ an, Brad Mulvey, Daniel Pearson, Trevor Machan and Brett Clarkson. The team has reached the half­ way mark in their regular schedule, including two exhibition games. They have eight wins, one tie and two losses. Th&y hjwe scored 54 goals and gave up 22. Andy Overholt (O.V.) has three shut-outs with a 2.0 goals-against average. Blyth Novice ‘A’ win big over Milverton On Thursday, Nov. 30, the Blyth Novice “A” hockey team put forth their best effort so far this year, over-powering Milverton by the score of 10 to 1. Milverton scored early in the game and held on to the 1-0 lead until the second period. Jeff Cowan opened the flood gates for Blyth with a natural hat-trick. Assisting on these goals were Michael An­ sley, Michael Haggitt and Chris Carter with two. Michael Haggitt scored Blyth’s fourth goal with Michael Ansley head-manning the puck. Darryl Bromley’s hard work paid off, as he split the Milverton defence and scored an unassisted effort. Michael Courtney scored Blyth’s sixth goal with Jeff Johnston picking up the assist. Number seven came off the stick of Darryl Bromley with linemates Michael Courtney and Amanda Anderson helping out. Michael Ansley buried the puck with defence partner Jeff Johnston picking up another assist. Michael Courtney scored number nine in this game with help coming from Amanda Anderson and Darryl Bromley. The last goal of this game came from a blast by Michael Haggitt with Darryl Bromley assisting on the play. Final score: Blyth 10, Milverton 1, with Jason Badley doing the honours in net, with a solid game.
