CRUSADERS HANG ON Monday, Nov. 20 saw the Crusa­ ders on the road again this time heading for Tavistock for a 9 p.m. game with the Royals. The Crusaders opened the scor­ ing at the 14:28 mark of the first period with Brian Ten Pas scoring from Tim Fritz and Troy Pocaluyko. Fritz then scored 21 seconds later from Ten Pas and Pocaluyko to up the lead to 2-0. Wellesley cut the lead to one by scoring with 52 seconds left in the period but the score combination scored nine seconds after the Merchants goal to regain the two-goal lead with Fritz getting the goal and Pocaluyko and Ten Pas getting the assists. Wellesley scored the first goal of the second period three minutes into the period. Dave Montgomery scored on set up from Dave Harding and Trev Pocaluyko to regain the two-goal margin. Welle­ sley however didn’t quit as they scored a minute and a half later to cut the lead to one again. Dave Stephenson put Brussels back up by two with assists going to Brian Campbell and Rob Cardiff. There was no scoring in the third period until the 14:30 minute mark when Stephenson and Campbell set up Harding.to increase the Crusad­ ers lead to three. Wellesley how­ ever came back to cut the lead to two. Troy Pocaluyko gave the team another three-goal lead by finish­ ing off the set up from Ten Pas and Fritz. Bill Haines scored the final goal of the game with assists going to Ken Cousins and Dave Mont- gomery to make the final score 8-4 for the Crusaders. DEFEAT DRAYTON On Sunday the Crusaders were on the road to Drayton for an afternoon contest. Kevin Deitner opened the scoring four minutes into the game on a set up from Ken Cousins and Brian Campbell. Tim Fritz then scored from Kevin McArter and Brian Ten Pas to add to the lead before the end of the first period. Troy Pocaluyko opened the scor­ ing in the second period when he and Dave Stephenson scored a short-handed goal five minutes into the period. Tim Fritz and Brian Ten Pas then set up Kevin McArter for the score. Fritz and Pocaluyko then set up McArter for his second of the game. McArter then scored his natural hat-trick on a pass from Ten Pas. The second period ended with the Crusaders up 6-0. Ten Pas and Fritz then set up McArter for his fourth goal in a row just 53 seconds into the third period. Dave Montgomery then increased the lead finishing off a pass from Dave Stephenson. Fritz and McArter combined again with goal when Tim Fritz scored on a set McArter getting the goal for his fifth of the game. Dave Mont­ gomery then scored an unassisted marker to give the team a 10-0 lead. Drayton broke the shut-out bid of goalie Mike Smith with six Brussels Pee Wees defeat Wingham 8-1 Last Monday the Brussels Pee Wees travelled to Blyth. This was the second time these two evenly matched teams have met this year. Blyth came out of this game with a 4-2 victory. Brussels opened the scoring with Tim Machan assisting on Wayne Alexander’s goal. Blyth replied five seconds later to tie the score. In the second period Blyth fired two more goals to take the lead. Ryan Finch scored from Trevor Machan to put Brussels within one. Blyth scored again to put them up 4-2 and the score remained at this . on a pass from Ken Cousins. Two minutes later Montgomery scored on a set-up from Stephenson and Pocaluyko. Kevin McArter rounded out the first period scoring to give the Crusaders a 6-1 lead. Brian Ten Pas opened the second period scoring with McArter and Ken Higgins getting the assists. Grand Valley got one goal back before Jamie Robinson scored on a play from McArter and Bill Haines. Brian Campbell increased the lead before the end of the second period with Ken Cousins and Kevin Deitner getting assists. The Crusaders lead after two periods. After Grand Valley opened third period scoring Kevin Deitner scored on a set-up from Cousins and Campbell to regian the large lead. The visitors then scored two more goals before Campbell finish­ ed off the scoring with Deitner and Jeff Espansen getting the assists making the final 11-5 for the Crusaders. This weekend the Crus­ aders travel to Drayton to defend their title in the Drayton Tourna­ ment which they have won two years in a row. up by Kevin McArter and Ron Smith to tie the game at 1-1. Fritz then set up Brian Ten Pas to give the Crusaders a one goal lead. The Royals however scored again to make the score 2-2 after one period. Two and one half minutes into the second period Dave Montgom­ ery connected on a pass from Troy Pocaluyko to give Brussels a short­ lived, one-goal lead. Tavistock tied the game up two minutes later. McArter then scored off a set­ up from Dave Montgomery and Troy Pocaluyko. Ken Higgins and Ken Cousins then set up Kevin Deitner to increase the Crusader lead by two goals. The Crusaders then went up by a three goal margin when Trev Pocaluyko and Tim Fritz set up Kevin McArter for the goal. This goal gave the Crusaders a 6-3 lead after two periods of play. Tavistock didn’t give up the fight as they scored two goals to bring them back to within one goal of the lead. Dave Harding scored the eventual game winner with assists going to Kevin Deitner and Ken Cousins. Tavistock cut the lead to one goal again but the Crusaders hung on for a 7-6 victory. OUTSCORE GRAND VALLEY On Nov. 25 Grand Valley travell­ ed to Brussels to play the Crusad­ ers for the first time this season. Dave Montgomery opened the scoring on a set-up from Troy Pocaluyko and Dave Stephenson. Stephenson then scored on a set-up from Montgomery and Pocaluyko. Grand Valley then cut the lead in half before Stephenson scored on a breakaway goal to regain a two- the 9-2 the count as the third period scoreless. These two teams will meet more in regular schedule should provide some exciting hoc­ key. On Sunday, Brussels journeyed to Wingham for an afternoon game. After one period of play Brussels was up 1-0 on a goal by Ryan Finch and assisted by Matt Lee. In the second Brussels scored four goals, Tim Machan from Doug Wilson, Brett Clarkson from Tim Machan and Ryan Finch scored two more to give him a hat-trick. Wingham replied with their only goal of the game. In the third Brussels scored three more for an 8-1 victory. CTJ T More sports on pane 25 The Blyth Radford Overloads Oldtimers will compete in the Mildmay Oldtimers Hockey Tour­ nament this weekend. The Overloads will be attempting to defend the ‘D’ championship title they won at last year’s tournament. The Overloads kept their modest win streak alive with a 13 to 3 victory over Clifford Oldtimers last Wednesday. Blyth goals were scor­ ed by Wayne McDougall, six; Terry Rutledge, two; Doug Scrimgeour, two; Tony Van Bakkel, one; Don Lecomte, one and Barney Stewart, one. Join us weekly for Men's & Ladies' FITNESS Brussels Atoms suffered through a tough week last week as they won one game but lost two others. Wednesday night the team play­ ed in Blyth but suffered a 3-1 set back. The first period was scoreless until Blyth scored with just 44 seconds left. Mike Dauphin tied the game for Brussels early in the second period but five minutes later Blyth took the lead for good. Blyth stretched the lead to 3-1 less than two minutes later. Brussels travelled to Zurich Fri­ day night and came home with a 12-7 win. Mike Dauphin scored from Shane Wilson and Shawn Nichol­ son with 6:22 left in the first period to give Brussels the lead. Slightly more than a minute later Chad McCallum scored from Jeff Elliott to make it 2-0 and before the period ended Scott Clarkson scored from Chad McCallum and Shawn Nichol­ son to stretch the lead. Zurich came back to score one goal before the first period ended. Zurich scored three goals in the second period to take the lead but Brussels came back with four goals in the last three minutes of the period. Steve Machan led the way for Brussels with a goal from Shane Wilson and Chad McCallum with 2:47 left. Mike Dauphin scored from Geoff Dalton with 40 seconds left, then with 13 seconds left Geoff Dalton gave Brussels the lead again. With just three seconds left Chad McCallum scored from Andy Exel. The Brussels guns kept firing early in the third when it took only 44 seconds for Josh Beuermann to score from Jeff Elliott. Zurich got one goal back but Steve Machan converted an assist from Chad McCallum to restore the lead and Chad McCallum increased the lead scoring from Geof Lewing- ton. Zurich scored again but Chad McCallum from Glen Verbeek and Shane Wilson unassisted took away any doubt of a Zurich comeback even though Zurich did score a goal with 1:50 left on the clock. Brussels could have used some of that excess scoring power Satur­ day when they visited Stephen township and came up on the short end of an 8-0 score.
