Winning artists Winners of Legion poster contest announced Prize winners in the Blyth Branch Legion Remembrance Day poster contest were announced recently. Pauline Stewart (left) won first place in the senior division while Greg Toll won first in the intermediate division. Presenting the two with their honours was Mary Lou Stewart of the Blyth Legion. This fall, Branch 420 to the Royal Canadian Legion held their Poster and Literary contest in conjunction with Dominion command, on the theme “Remembrance”. This con­ test was held between the pupils of Hullett Central Public School and Blyth Public School. In the Intermediate category of the Poster contest, Pauline Stew­ art, Blyth P.S., was first place 'winner. Brian Werkema, second, Wilfred Datema, third and Greg McClinchey, Hullett C.P.S., receiv­ ing Honourable Mention. In the junior category of the poster contest, Greg Toll was first place winner; Abigail Ramirez, second and Amanda Howson re­ ceived third place. All students are from Blyth Public School. In the intermediate category of the essay contest, the winners were: first, Stephanie Lentz, Blyth P.S.; second, Cheri Kryzanowski, Hullett C.P.S. and third, Jennifer Stadelmann of Blyth P.S. In the junior category of the essays the winners were: first, Charlene Hulzebos and second Jennifer Brigham from Blyth P.S. In the intermediate category of the Poems contest the winners were: first, Suzanne Shultz and second, Erin Jamieson of Hullett C.P.S. In the junior category of the Poems contest the winners were: first, Abigail Ramirez and second Amanda Howson from Blyth Public School. The first place entries are for­ warded to the Zone Contest held in the month of December. Prizes and certificates from the Blyth Branch Contest are awarded to the pupils at the Public Speaking Competition to be held at the Hullett C.P.S. in February. Jean Bewley tells about China The Blyth Swinging Seniors sat down to a delicious pot luck dinner at 12 noon on Nov. 22 at the Blyth Memorial Hall. After dinner, president John Hesselwood opened the business meeting and welcomed all. Lloyd Walden led a lively sing-song accompanied by Phyllis Boak at the piano. Happy Birthday was sung to those members having birthdays in November and December. John announced the birthday party to be held in Huronview on Dec. 13 and will be led by the Blyth Seniors, who will provide some program and lunch. Isabel Craig introduced the guest, Jean Bewley from Brussels. She showed pictures of her trip to China in May 1988. She took viewers from Beijing in the north to Shanghai and told many interesting things about life in China. She said Beijing is full of bicycles and not many cars and has a population of 10 million. She said The Great Wall is 3946 miles long and is 2600 years old, also it is seven meters high and Starting Monday, Dec. 18th Extended Christmas Hours Blyth. People Visitors at the home of Feme and Harv McDowell on Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Don Cowan and their daughter Chris Caldwell of Exeter. Harvey Wightman of Lucknow also visited at the same home on Wednesday evening. Dorothy Daer and Bert Daer had the high scores at the Nov. 20 euchre party at Blyth Memorial Hall. Bernice McClinchey and Harry Crich were the low lady and man for the evening. Ida Proctor and Ted Mills had the most lone hands. Alberta Stevens won the special prize. At the Lost Heir card party on Nov. 22, there were six tables in play. Mabel Riley and Bert Daer had the high scores. Janet Lawrie and Millar Richmond had the low scores. Lloyd Walden won the special prize. Euchre parties are held every Monday night at Memorial Hall at 8 p.m. and lost heir parties every Wednesday evening at the same time. Birthday congratulations to Brent Brooks who’ll celebrate his 22nd birthday on Dec. 3 and to Lloyd Sippel who celebrated his birthday Nov. 30 (which birthday is classified information) and Barb Howson who celebrates on Dec. 9.
