56 curlers take part
in Brussels bonspiel
The Brussels Curling Club host
ed a mixed bonspiel on Saturday,
November 18. There were 56
curlers participating.
The 9:30 a.m. draw was sponsor
ed by Cardiff and Mulvey. Doug
Sholdice, assisted by Stu Steiss,
presented the prizes to each team.
In first place with 47.75 points was
the team of Ross Veitch, Velma
Locking, Rob Veitch and Bev
Stevenson. Second prize with 34.5
points went to Stu Steiss, Marg
Taylor, Steve Steiss and Madelene
Steiss. Third place with 33.5 points
and 18 rocks scored went to Neil
Hemingway, Susan Coghlin, Ron
Coghlin and Donna Hemingway. In
fourth place with 33.5 points and 12
rocks scored was the team of Doug
Sholdice, Corrie Rammeloo, Neil
Mitchell and Michelle Vader. In
fifth place was the team of Rick
McDonald, Jo-Ann McDonald, Bill
Shortreed and Valerie Shortreed.
Sixth place went to Bob Alexander,
Joyce Alexander, Fred Smith and
Teuni Smith.
The 11 a.m. draw was sponsored
by Pannell Kerr MacGillivray. Nan

cy Exel and Stu Steiss presented
the teams with the prizes. First
with 45.25 points went to Jim
Patterson, Pauline Patterson, Wal
ter Nicholson and Donna Quipp.
Second with 34.5 points went to
Don Hastie, Karen McMichael,
Randy Hutchison and Sandra Ed
gar. In third place, with 32.75
points was the team of Dave
MacDonald, Wendy MacDonald,
Brad Clements and Cheryl Mac
Donald. Fourth with 32 points went
to Tom Warwick, Tami Allen, Glen
Allen and John Cummings. In fifth
place was Gary Pipe, Lori Parker,
Brian Warwick and Chris Fasche-
way. Sixth place went to Mike
Hoyles, Charmayne Machan, Pui
Ng and Marilyn Brown. Seventh
place went to Peter Exel, Nancy
Exel, Robert Grein and Patrick
Deitrick. In eighth place was the
team of Peter Fuller, Carolyn Orth,
Fancis Laing and Mike Bingham.
Stu Steiss thanked everyone for
attending and issued an invitation
for curlers to return to the club’s
next bonspiel which is an open
men’s bonspiel being held January
22, 1990.

team from Brussels didn’t manage to win this game but certainly appear to have given it their best

Blyth Pee Wees win one, lose one
Belgrave Atoms lose
to Hensall, beat Bayfield

The Blyth Pee Wees continued
their puck odessy Monday, Novem
ber 13 as they defeated Hensall for
the second time in a week, this time
by a 6-2 count.
The team scored two goals in
every period and received solid
netminding from Chris Lee and
Michael de Jong on their way to
victory. Blyth opened the scoring
less than a minute into the game as
Jerrod Button finished off a nice
two on one pass from Michael
Bromley. Defenceman Wilfred Da-
tema upped the count to 2-0 as he
stole the puck at the blueline,
eluded a Hensall attacker with a
shifty “spinerama”, and drilled
the disk past a surprised netmind-
er.
Blyth took a 4-2 second period
lead as each team lit the red light
up twice. Brian McNichol scored
the winner as he banked one off the
post after a set up from Ryan
Chamney. Christopher Howson as
sisted on an insurance marker as
Ryan Chamney connected after he
dug the puck out from a maze of
players.
Two more goals late in the third
period iced the 6-2 win for Blyth.
Brian McNichol scored his second
of the game on a screened slapshot
from the blueline and Christopher
Howson ended the game scoring
less than one minute later as he
cashed in his own rebound with
assists from linemates Brian Mc
Nichol and Ryan Chamney.
The Pee Wees travelled to
Brussels on Friday, November 17
with visions of keeping their winn
ing streak alive. But after building
a 4-2 third period lead, Blyth
watched as Brussels stole the
victory with two late game short-
handed goals.
After Brussels took a 1-0 first
period lead, Blyth responded with
three goals in the second frame for
a 3-2 lead after two. Jerrod Button
scored Blyth’s first goal as Michael
Bromley recovered defenceman

On Monday night Brussels tra
velled to Zurich and came home
with an 11-1 victory. After the first
period Brussels was up two goals.
Randy Beuermann opened the
scoring assisted by Tim Machan,
and Tim Machan was assisted by
Pete Gusso.
The Brussels boys came out fired
up in the second period with seven
unanswered goals. Randy Beuer
mann scored twice to give him a
hat-trick. Both goals were assisted
by Brett Clarkson and Tim Mach
an. Dave Lewington scored from
Brad Mulvey. Thirty seconds later
Lewington and Ryan Finch assisted
on Doug Wilson’s goal. Clarkson
scored his first of two goals
assisted by Beuermann and Tim
Machan. With two minutes left in
Wilfred Datema’s shot that was
wide of the net and fed a perfect
pass to Jerrod as the Brussels puck
stopper could only get a piece of

the second Dan Pearson was fed a
pass from Trevor Machan. Wayne
Alexander rounded out the second
period with his first goal of the
game.
Zurich scored in the third period
to spoil Andy Overholt’s third
shut-out of the season. Gusso
scored two goals with an assist
from Mulvey to round out the
scoring. The line of Tim Machan,
Clarkson and Beuermann showed
the opposition how to play their
position and came up with a 13
point night.
Wednesday night the Pee Wees
travelled to Howick for an exhibi
tion match. This game resulted in a
5-5 tie.

November 8 Belgrave Atoms
played their first game of the
season in Hensall. Both teams
looked good and were fairly evenly
matched.
Brent Robinson put Belgrave on
the scoreboard with one minute left
in the first period. There was no
score in the second period.
In the third period Hensall came
up with two goals making the score
2-1 for Hensall. This was an
exciting game played by all.
The second game was played
Saturday at Bayfield. The Belgrave
boys went with winning on their
mind and they did just that.
Ryan Cook got his first goal of
the season assisted by Kyle Moran.
Kyle Moran got one unassisted.
Brent Robinson got five goals and
was assisted on three by Brian
Marks; Kirk Krieger and Danny
Cusso. This making the final score
7-2 for Belgrave. Two good games
played by all.
Team members are Chris Piluke,
goalie; Brian Marks, Ryan Moffatt,
Tim Pfeiffer, Eugene Fenton,
Brent Robinson. Jeremy Campbell.

Hasbeans
upset Overloads
The Blyth Radford Overloads
Oldtimers won one and lost one
game this past week. The Over
loads dropped a 5 to 1 decision to
the Zurich Hasbeans last Wednes
day evening. Gary Courtney scored
the lone Blyth goal.
On Sunday afternoon the Over
loads travelled to Mildmay and
came away with an 8 to 5 victory.
Wayne McDougall led the offen
sive attack with four goals. Gary
Courtney scored twice with singles
going to Bryan Black and Tony Van
Bakel.
The Overloads next home game
is Wednesday, Nov. 22 against
Clifford.
