Crusaders end slump with big win over Welleslefi Big save Steve Howson of the Blyth Industrial League team is foiled by the Belgrave goaltender during action at the tournament for industrial leagueandoldtimer teams in Blyth on the weekend. Blyth went on for a big winover Belgraveand eventually won the industrial division of the tournament, beating Garb and Gear in the final. _______________________. Rutledge Sports scores big The Blyth Novice “A” team took to the ice on October 27 for an exhibition match in Brussels and out-skated the home team by the score of 14 to 1. These same two teams met in WOAA league action on November 2 in Blyth, with Blyth again winning 19 to 1. Blyth looked over powering as all the players got their names on the scoring sheet. Blyth headed for Huron Park on Saturday, Nov. 4, hoping to keep their winning ways alive. Stephen Thompson (Huron Park) came out flying, controlling the game and scoring the first goal at the five minute mark by Matt Regier. Blyth slowly started to find their skating legs and scored three goals near the end of the first perio^. Darryl Bromley started1 Blyth off with a quick shot set up by'jlinemate Michael Courtney. Michael Haggitt put Blyth up 2-1 on a unassisted effect and Jeff Cowan finished the first period with Blyth’s third goal set up by Michael Haggitt and Jeremiah Hamm. Blyth out-played Stephen Twp. in the second period, but only scored once, Darryl Bromley find ing the spot, set up by Amanda Anderson. The third period belonged to Blyth as Jeff Cowan scored two quick unassisted goals for Blyth. Mike Ansley displayed his moves as he scored, set up by Jeff Cowan and Michael Haggitt. Blyth finish ed the game scoring their eighth goal off the stick of Michael Haggit with Jeff Cowan picking up the assist. The final score was Blyth 8, Stephen Twp. 1. Scott Bromley and Jason Badley have done the goaltending duties so far and allowed only one goal in each game. The next game is in Blyth against a strong Mitchell team November 16 at 7 p.m. Overloads lose The Blyth Radford Overloads Oldtimers competed in the Blyth Minor Hockey and Ringette Tour nament this past weekend. The Overloads recorded two wins and a tie in the round robin play to finish first in their division. The Over loads defeated Chesley 7 to 4, Wingham 5 to 3 and tied Port Albert 2 to 2. The Overloads played Port Al bert in the sudden death final. Port Albert scored their winning goal with five seconds to play in regulation time to take a 3 to 2 victory and the championship. On Nov. 4 Tavistock was in town to play the Crusaders. The Royals jumped out to 3-0 first period lead. The Crusaders came back early in the second period to cut the lead to 3-1 on goal by Brian Ten Pas from Tim Fritz and Paul Robinson. Troy Polcaluy- ko, on a set-up from Paul Robinson and Kevin Deitner, made it a 3-2 game after two periods. Tavistock opened up a two-goal lead half way through the third before Rob Cardiff scored from Kevin McArter and Dave Mont gomery to bring the Crusaders back to within one goal. Tavistock then scored a minute and a half later to increase their lead once again. Ken Higgins scored on a pass from Rob Cardiff to make it a one goal game before Troy Pocaluyko scored to tie up the game on a set-up from Tim Fritz and Rob Cardiff. Tavistock scored the game winner with two and a half minutes to go in the game for a 6-5 victory. DRAYTON WINS Drayton was in town on Nov. 11 for a contest with the home town team. Dave Stephenson opened the scoring 1:57 into the game with assists going to Brian Campbell and Ken Cousins. Drayton came back with two goals of their own to take the lead before Troy Pocaluyko scored from Brian Ten Pas and Tim Fritz to tie up the game. Drayton scored once more before the period ended to take a 3-2 lead after one. Drayton then took a two-goal lead 13 minutes into the second before Brain Ten Pas scored from Troy Pocaluyko and Jeff Espensen to bring the team back to within one goal after two periods. Drayton extended its lead by two more goals before Ken Higgins from Dave Harding and Brian Campbell to bring the Crusaders with two goals. That was as close as they got before Drayton scored once more to end the game 7-4 for the visitors. On Sunday, Nov. 12 the Crusa ders were on the road to Milverton to play the 4-Wheel Drivers in an afternoon contest. Dave Harding opened the scor ing half way through the period with assists going to Dave Mont gomery and Rob Cardiff. The first period ended 1-0. Rob Cardiff got his first goal of the game seven minutes into the second with Dave Montgomery and Dave Harding getting the assists. Rob then scored his second of the game with 1:06 remaining in the period with Troy Pocaluyko and Brian Ten Pas getting the assists on the goal to end the period 3-0. against 1 Harvesters The Brussels Jr. C. Bulls behind a five-goal, seven-point effort from centre Marty Rutledge trounced the visiting Grand Valley Harves ters 9-1 Sunday afternoon. The Bulls who returned to their early season hard-working style and used their size and excellent skating ability to dominate in the Harvester’s zone, improved their record to six wins and two ties in 10 games. Brussels scored the only goal of the first period when Rutledge and Ron Strome combined to set up Steve Vandendool at 9:11. Three minutes into the second period Andrew Henderson sent Brett Martin in alone for a short- handed effort. Rutledge set up Vandendool for his second of the game, then notched two goals for himself, the first on the powerplay from Joe Walker and Corey Mc Kee, the second on passes from Strome and Vandendool for a 5-0 lead after two periods. Brussels added to their total early in the third when Jason Kraemer literally overpowered the Grand Valley goaltender with a slapshot from the faceoff circle. Rutledge completed his hat-trick before Grand Valley broke the shutout of Jeff Roy with 1:41 remaining in the game. Rutledge added to his league leading of play, scoring on goalmouth passes from Strome and Vandendool and tipp ing home a Bevin Flett point shot. The Bulls fired 41 shots torward the Harvester goal while Jeff Roy, a Clinton native with two years Jr. C. experience with Goderich was solid in stopping 23 shots in his Bulls debut. The Bulls travel to Hanover Friday night with first place on the line. The Crusaders will host Welles ley on Saturday night for their next home game and then go to Drayton for a game on Sunday afternoon and Monday night they travel to Tavistock for a nine o’clock game there. TO 12 NOON Blyth Tykes win After starting the season with a win and a loss the Blyth Tykes had a hard fought third game with Clinton. It was the 6.33 minute mark of the first period before either team could find the net. Finally Dean Wilson tipped in a shot from Jeremy Van Amersfoort for Blyth. Clinton replied shortly after when they squeezed a shot through the pads of Bryce Toll. Blyth came right back a minute later to take the lead with a goal from Jeremy Van Amersfoort. That ended the scor ing until nearly the end of second period when Clinton the game 2-2. The start! of the third period not good as Clinton took the lead 3-2. With a lot of hustle around the Clinton net Aaron Bakker picked the puck out of a scramble in front of the net and tied the game 3-3. Then late in the third period David Ansley set up Dean Wilson all alone in front of the Clinton net, Dean slid it in to bring home a 4-3 win. The Blyth squad received excellent goaltending from Bryce Toll. The Tykes return home to play Brussels on Saturday, November 18 at 10 a.m. the tied was More sports on page 18
