Actually this was just part of the rough and tumble action of theCrusadersgameagainstTavistock in Brussels last Saturday night. The game was very close with the Crusaders losing in the last few minutes. Brussels PeeWees defeat Zurich The Brussels Jr. C Bulls learned the hard way that visiting teams are not impressed by the Juniors early season press-clippings as the Goderich Sailors upset the Bulls 5-4 Sunday afternoon. The Sailors simply “wanted” the game more as they outhustltfd Brussels for two periods before hanging on for the victory in the third. The loss drops the Bulls’ record ro five wins, two losses and two ties. Brussels opened the scoring with two quick powerplay goals midway through the first: Steve Fritz from Brett Manin and Bevin Flett at 10:12 followed by an unassisted Marty Rutledge effort at 11:39. On Saturday, October 28 the team travelled to Goderich where they were out-hustled, going home with a 9-0 defeat. After shaking off their loss to Goderich, the team took revenge on Hensail the following Saturday. Steve Fritz set up Kevin DeJong for a shorthanded effort at 12:55 but the Sailors’ powerplay quickly replied 45 seconds later. Corey McKee ended the scoring at 14:27 with assists to Flett and J. C. Hewitt and while the Bulls domin­ ated in the third outshooting God­ erich 17-6 they couldn’t score the equalizer. The Bulls’ only game this week is Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. when the Grand Valley Harvesters make their first appearance of the sea­ son. Friday night the Bulls held their annual “Meet the Player”. strong. When the final buzzer rang Blyth had knotcfted up the next 17 goals. Leaving the final score 17-1 for Blyth. Goal scorers were Jeremy Van- Amersfoort, 5; David Ansley, 3; Nathan Shannon, 2; Joel Arthur, 2; Dean Wilson, Shawn Bromley, Aaron Bakker, Michael Lyons, and Matt Anderson each with one. The next game for the Tykes is Saturday, November 11, in Clinton at 1 p.m. Brussels travelled to Zurich on Monday, Oct. 30 to start their 1989-90 season. Both teams failed to score in the first period as they played end-to-end action. In the second period Tim Mach- an scored the first Brussels goal. Brussels came out strong in the third period scoring three more. Matt Lee dented the twine assisted by Trevor Machan and Chris Stevenson. It took only 13 seconds before Doug Wilson scored from Matt Lee. The final goal of the game was scored by Randy Beuer- mann. Andy Overholt recorded his first shut-out of the year. The Zurich netminders were kept busy as Brussels fired 62 shots at them. On Friday, Nov. 3, Brussels hosted Howick and defeated their visitors 3-0. Andy Overholt record­ ed his second shut-out of the week. Doug Wilson opened the scoring assisted by Chris Stevenson. With 32 seconds left in the second period Matt Lee scored. Wayne Alexander scored the final goal of the game. Next game is Friday, Nov. 10 at 8:45 as Wingham provide the opposition. BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Pee Wee’s started the season on a winning note last week as they crushed the visiting Hensail squad 11-1. Blyth started slowly as Hensall scored the only first period goal but the team gained momentum in the second period and turned the game into a rout by the third frame. Jerrod Button was top marksman as he dented the twine six times. Linemate Michael Bromley dis­ played some outstanding playmak­ ing skills as he recorded five assists Overloads win /, lose 1 The Blyth Radford Overloads Oldtimers recorded a win and a loss during the past week. The Goderich Deckhands down­ ed the Overloads 7 to 5 in a game in Blyth last Wednesday. On Friday the Overloads travelled to Clifford and were victorious by a 11 to 1 score. Barney Stewart paced the scorers with four goals. Jim Button and Tom Black scored two each. Singles went to Gary Courtney, Bryan Black and Tony Van Bakkel. The Overload’s next scheduled game is Wednesday, Nov. 8 in Blyth against Ayton. The Over­ loads will compete in the Blyth Minor Hockey Oldtimers Tourna­ ment this weekend. Although this lopsided win buoy­ ed the boys confidence, the team still has a lot of hard work ahead of them. I’m sure Coach Courtney’s new whip will play a large role in this development.
