Blyth church marks anniversary with service Continued from page 7 will be filled with love and you will want to help someone out every day. Two hymns provided the conclu sion for the message: “He Touched Me” sung by Mr. Cowan and “Though Your Sins Be as Scarlet” sung by the male quartet Jeff Wittich, Shane Snell, Lloyd Wal den and Harvey McDowell. At the evening service special music was again provided by the men’s quartet when they sang “Beautiful Land” and by the senior ladies choir singing “Back of the Clouds”. Mr. Cowan’s message was “And the Dance Goes On”. First he took a few moments to thank God for our many blessings and saying at this anniversary time we must look back on the past, look ahead to the future but most important it is a time when we should evaluate our life in relationship to God and Jesus. Christ has laid the founda tion and it is up to us to build on it. In the dance of life it’s the example we set that’s important. Mr. Cowan said we must remember to live by God’s rule not by man’s. In Galations six, verse seven, it says “Be not deceived, God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap”. Verse nine says, “Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we shall reap if we do not grow weary.” Mr. Cowan said we must be willing to help others and that our Groomsman was Steven Steven son, brother of the groom, from Ganges, B.C. Ushers were Allan Scott and Brad Cook, RR 1, Belgrave, friends of the couple. Organist Elizabeth Procter, RR 5, Brussels played the procession al, “Trumpet Voluntaire’’ and the recessional, “Jesus Joy of Man’s Desiring”. Soloist Janice Mathe son, RR 1, Listowel was accompan ied by pianist Joanne Chapman, RR 5, Brussels as she sang “O Perfect Love” and “May Each Day”. Karen Cook of Belgrave read 1 Corinthians, Verse 13, during the service. The three are sisters of the bride. Following the ceremony a recep tion was held at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Cen tre in Brussels. The couple is residing in Belgrave. greatest challenge is to pass the Christian faith on to our children. Then God’s love will be perfect ed in our hearts. He closed by singing “Bless This House”. Rev. Ramirez pronounced benediction and a fellowship hour was enjoyed downstairs. CAMERON McMILLAN BRUSSELS AND ETHEL UNITED CHURCHES Many years ago there was a General in the Syrian army, Naa- man, who had a terrible skin disease: leprosy. There was no treatment or cure available in his own country. Naaman’s brilliant military career appeared to be doomed. A Jewish slave girl in Naaman’s house suggested he visit a famous Jewish prophet and miracle worker Elisha. Naaman made a long journey to Elisha’s house accom panied by full military escort. However, Elisha didn’t even bother to come out to see him. He sent out a messenger, a junior medical assistant who glanced at him and said: “Go wash yourself seven times in our nearby local river, the Jordan, and you will be cured.” Naaman felt insulted. “I thought that Elisha would at least come out to me, pray to the Lord his God, wave his wand over the diseased spot and cure me. Besides, aren’t the rivers of my home country, Syria better than any river in Israel? I could have washed in them and been cured.” Naaman went away from Eli sha’s house. He was very upset at the simple answer he was given for his serious medical problem. He expected a much more dramatic act a mighty medical miracle to be performed in front of him. It’s an old problem that has been with human beings throughout all our history. Many people, like Naaman are turned off by religion because what the preacher says sounds too simple, dull, uninterest ing, ordinary. “Believe the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved”. “I am the Lord, your God. You shall have no other gods before me”. “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. You shall love your neighbour as yourself’. “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, who ever believes in him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.” “Be kind to one another, bear one another’s burdens.” “A new com mandment I give you. Love one another”. Mr. and Mrs. James Rettin- gerand Mr. and Mrs. Donald Craig announce the marriage of their children, Joyce and Doug on November 25,1989 at 3 p.m. in St. Agatha Church. Reception to follow at Welles ley Community Centre. Come on, Minister, the people exclaim, is that all you’ve got to say! Just a bunch of pietistic platitudes. Our world today is sick unto death. Isn’t there some dra matic new cure that modern theolo gians have discovered that you can announce? Isn’t there some book I could read whose teachings I could accept and instantly be cured? The latest fad does not always offer us the best solution to our problems. Old fashioned, simple ideas often have a lot of wisdom in them. When we try them, we find that they actually do work. In Naaman’s party there were some wise advisers who said to him, “Sir if the prophet had told This Christmas ANGLICAN CHURCH OF CANADA Nov.5/89 HOLYEUCHARIST REV. 9:30a.m. Trinity, Blyth Melville Presbyterian Church BRUSSELS Rev. He took Elisha’s simple suggestion and was better the next morning. Are we as wise and humble as Naaman? Are we wise enough to take good religious advice when it is offered to us even though it sounds terribly simple, routine and dull. “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Love one another.
