Two sittings were sold out at the church supper. JOYCE AGNES VAN VLIET A well-known and respected resident of the Brussels area has passed away following a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Joyce van Vliet died at her resi­ dence at RR 2, Brussels on October 26, 1989. She was 53 years of age. The daughter of the late Harold Thomas and his wife Verna Thomas of Brussels, the former Joyce Agnes Thomas was born in Brus­ sels. She married Jan van Vliet (who survives her) in May of 1957 and was employed for many years at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. Mrs. van Vliet was an active member of Duff’s United Church, serving for some time as Sunday School teacher there and as a member of the United Church Women. A great lover of music and performing, Mrs. van Vliet took part in many stage productions including “Oklahoma” and “Annie Get Your Gun” which were both presented at Grey Central School some years ago. She enjoyed putting together her own original programs and often times perform­ ed for area organizations. Mrs. van Vliet was the loving mother of John and his wife Diane of Walton, Debbie and her husband Frank Claessens of Milton, Janis and her husband Brian McCooey of Fort Erie, and Joyanne of St. Catharines. Also left to mourn her are her grandchildren Jennifer and Michelle Claessens, Amanda and Meghan McCooey, two sisters, Ruth Durst of Stratford, and Joan Edgar of Listowel and one brother Charlie of Brussels. Besides her father, Mrs. van Vliet was prede­ ceased by a sister Mary. Mrs. van Vliet rested at the Betts Funeral Home in Brussels until the funeral service on Sunday, October 29 at 3 p.m. Reverend Bonnie Cole Arnal of Duff’s United Church officiated. Interment followed at Brussels Cemetery. Obituaries CLARENCE WOOD Many friends in the Wingham and Listowel areas were shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Clarence R. Wood of RR 4, Wingham, which occurred at his home on Monday, Oct. 16. He was 63 years of age. Mr. Wood was born June 16, 1926, at Britton, Ontario, a son of the former Mary Maybury and the late John Wood. His mother is now Mrs. Elmer Noble and resides at Listowel. During the Second World War, Mr. Wood served with the Royal Canadian Navy in the North Atlantic and the South Pacific. On Nov. 1, 1947, he married the former Lycille Ward at Ethel and they came to this area to reside in 1967. He worked as a florist at Tompkins Flowers of Listowel and Lewis Flowers of Wingham, and at the time of his death was employed in the maintenance department at F. E. Madill Secondary School. He was a member of St. Andrew’s Pallbearers were her nephews: Bob Thomas, David Thomas, Doug Durst, Michael Durst, Murray Cou­ sins and Randy Cousins. Flower bearers were: Clarence McCut­ cheon, Jim Armstrong, Wallace Bell, Don Fraser and Doug Evans. In remembrance donations to Huron County Home Care or Duff’s United Church would be appreciat­ ed. Left to mourn his passing, be­ sides his wife, mother and step­ father, are his family: Joanne and Michael Marks of Wingham and Douglas Wood, at home; five sisters, Mrs. Alvin (Minnie) Buch­ anan of Fonthill; Mrs. Inez Simp­ son, Listowel; Mrs. Gordon (Verna) Schnarr, Kitchener; Mrs. Bruce (Helen) Speiran, Atwood and Mrs. Bill (Bernice) Woods, Listowel; two brothers, Earl Wood of Mitchell and Murray Wood, Exeter and three step-sisters and their hus­ bands: Reta and Lyle Spence of Kitchener, Ruth and Bill Major and Alice and Bill Clifton of Vancouver. He was predeceased by his father, John J. Wood (1962); brothers, Ross in France during World War Two and Kenneth (1979) and one sister, Mrs. Cora Breutigam (1985) Friends and relatives paid their respects at The McBurney Funeral Home, Wingham, until Wednes­ day, Oct. 18, when service was conducted at 1:30 by Rev.
