Mike and Debbie McGill of Port Hope took over the store on September 29 from James and Dorothy Schneider, who owned the store for the past two years, and have changed the name to M & D General Store. The McGills decided to make the move from Port Hope as they felt that Toronto people were infiltrat ing the community of 12,000 people and it was their desire to bring up their three children, Molly, 11, Joey, seven and Melissa, three and a half; the way they themselves had been brought up. “The pace is so much different here than in the bigger areas,” Debbie says. The couple have lots of plans for remodelling and expansion and Debbie said that if there is a particular demand for something they will do their best to get it. “We have had lots of people inquiring about deli meats so we plan to open a deli counter,” she said. Also, there will be minor changes in the hours with the store being open later on Fridays and Saturdays and earlier on Sundays. Mike is in the process of present ly renovating a room in the back for Auburn Compiled by Mrs. Mildred Lawlor. Phone 526-7589 Anniversary service at Knox Rev. Dave Snihur conducted the Thanksgiving Service at Knox United Church and Nancy Park was organist. The flowers and candelabras were in the sanctuary from the wedding of Anna Marie Young and Dave Harmon. Call to Worship was read alternately followed by hymn “Come Ye Thankful People Come’’. Rev. Snihur gave the Prayer of Approach and the Lord’s Prayer was said in unison. The senior choir sang an anthem. The children’s song was “I will enter His Gates” followed by their story. The hymn “Count Your Blessings” was sung. Scriptures were read from Chronicles and Thessalonians. Rev. Snihur’s sermon was entitled Debbie, who is a hairstylist, to open a shop. She still owns the one she ran in Port Hope but has found someone to manage it. Mike does all the renovations himself including dry-walling, which he hopes to continue to do on the side. In the brief length of time they have been in Auburn the McGills have found the community very much to their liking. “Our children seem to be settling in and making friends,” Debbie stated. “Every one has been friendly. They have had to have patience with us as this is the first time we’ve done this and no one has seemed to mind.” “The Power of Praise and Thanks giving”. The offering was received by Greg Park and Allan Webster and dedicated. The hymn “We Plow the Fields and Scatter” was sung. Rev. Snihur pronounced the Benediction and the Benediction Response “Go Now In Peace” ended the service. Next Sunday is the special Anniversary Service with Rev. Kathi Urbasik-Hundley of North Street United Church, Goderich as speaker.
