Take time to think about these fascinating food facts:
‘Thanks to its size and diversity, Ontario produces over 200 different
commodities including specialty crops such as peaches and ginseng.
‘Ontario produces more hogs, poultry, eggs, sheep and lambs, fruit and
vegetables, corn and soybeans than any other province.
‘Pork is Ontario’s number oneagricultural exportand the United States buys
almost 85 per cent of our pork exports.
‘Ontario produces more fruit and vegetables than any other province. Over
40 per cent of the fruit grown in Canada grows in Ontario.
‘Ontario’s largest fruit crop is apples, contributing to about $50 million of
Ontario’s economy annually.
‘Ontario produces over a third of Canada’s milk and almost half its cheese.
*Ontarioexportsmorethan$2 billion worth of food and agricultural products
everyyeararound the world. The United States, Ontario’s biggest customer,
takes about two-thirds of our food and agricultural exports.
‘Ontarioand Canada have thesecondlowestfood prices in the world after the
United States. Canadians spend 15.5 per cent of their income on food.
‘Thecostofachickendinnerforfour, including chicken, butter, milk, bread,
apples, green beans and potatoes cost $13.89 in Toronto. The same meal
would cost$31.36 in Tokyo, $19.12 in Milan, $14.03 in Hong Kong and $10.67
in New York.
‘The number of new farmers entering the business of agriculture has
increased marginally over the years, from 25.3 per cent from 1976-81 to 26.6
per cent in 1981-86.
