Obituaries EVELYN ROE MAIR Mrs. Evelyn Roe Mair of 687 Elizabeth St., Brussels died at her home September 18, 1989. Born in Wingham, she was a homemaker and a member of Melville Presby­ terian Church. She married Jim Mair and they had three daughters, Norma Royer of Ajax, Linda Ros- sart of Mt. Hope and Joan Mair of Ajax. She was also the loving sister of Spence Scott of Brussels and Lloyd Scott of Wingham and Isabel Stewart of Manitoba. The funeral service was held September 21 from Melville Pres­ byterian Church with Rev. C. McAvoy officiating. Interment was Business and_______ Professional Directory in Brussels Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were carried out by Betts Funeral Home. Serving as pallbearers were Jim Bowman, Gerald Gibson, Doug Hemingway, Harold Steffler, Mur­ ray Hoover and Lloyd Wheeler. Flowerbearers were Dave Rossart, Jim Bassel and Jim Scott. KATHLEEN MARIE McWhirter Mrs. Kathleen Marie McWhirter passed away at her home 15 Mill St., Brussels on September 25, 1989. She was 56 years of age. She was born in Morris Town­ ship, the daughter of Stella Lillian Clark and the late John Henry Clark. For 11 years she served as a courier for Canada Post. She was a member of St. John’s Anglican Church and a member of that church’s alter guild for 20 years. She married Jack Alexander McWhirter who survives her and they had four children: Garry McWhirter and his wife Dianne of London; Jacqueline Cook and her husband Leslie of Brussels; Connie Pletch and her husband Don of Ilderton and Gail Hodgins and her husband Bob of Cambridge. Also surviving are her grandchildren Bryana, Kathleen, Brittany, Amanda, Mike, Dan, Marc and Ashley. The funeral service will be held September 27 from St. John’s Anglican Church at 2 p.m. with Rev. David Fuller officiating. In­ terment is in Brussels Cemetery. She was born in Ashfield Town­ ship in 1888 of two Huron County pioneer families. Her mother was the former Sarah Bogie, the daugh­ ter of Martha Sallows and Capt. Andrew Bogie and her father was William George Hawkins, the son of William Hawkins and Maria Sheppard. After attending SS 11 at Sheppardton, she worked at the historic Point Farms resort north of Goderich. In her own autobiogra­ phy written in 1968 called “A Heap ’O Livin’’ she recalls from this time the excursion boat which ran between Goderich and Detroit each summer, her trip on the short-lived electric railway north of Goderich, and her sighting of Halley’s Comet GENERAL J. In 1911 she married Herbert Foster, of another pioneer family, and they farmed near Sheppardton until Bert’s sudden death in 1921. With the resourcefulness of spirit and generosity of heart which .marked her whole life, Agnes proceeded to work a new farm and care for her four young children, Ruth, Mabel, Ralph and Irene until her second marriage to William Foster in 1928. A large Saskatche­ wan wheat farm became home for the next seven years where she became the beloved “Mother Agnes” to another six children. Although she left the west follow­ ing Will’s death in 1935, she has always held a special place in the hearts of all her second family and their descendants. Continued on page 19 LIFE R.
