From the Minister's Study Shouldn’t we care? BY REV. LORENZO RAMIREZ BLYTH UNITED CHURCH “What is man that thou art mindful of him and the son of man that thou dost care for him’’ Psalm 8: 4. Last week, as I was driving home from visiting parishioners in Lon don hospitals, the day could not have been any better if I had ordered one, especially being the last full day of summer. The sun was bright and warm; some trees already turning colours. All the country along number 4 highway denotes a bountiful harvest. Apple orchards were laden heavily with fruits. Dark large butternut squash and large orange pumpkins were scattered on the fields. The com stalks are high and beans are ready for the combine. Into my mind a flash of many farmer friends with happy and grateful faces came, for once again God’s providential grace came through. And I said audibly in awe: “How marvelous you are O God!” But why? Then this verse came to mind. “What is man that thou art mindful of him and the sons of man that thou dost care for him?” I was in this state of bliss when I turned on the radio in the car. And the news about hurricane Hugo Maitland Presbyterial women attend WMS conference Two bus loads of ladies from the Maitland Presbyterial Women’s Missionary Society enjoyed a trip to Crieff Hills, south of Guelph and west of Puslinch on Monday, Sept. 11. Crieff Hills is owned and operat ed by the Presbyterian Church in Canada as a retreat and conference centre for the church under the directorship of Rev. Robert Specer. Following a conducted tour of the property, luncheon was served in McLean Hall and Mrs. Maureen Spencer told about the facilities. There are six different buildings to house guests so they can accom modate up to eighty people or smaller groups of 12 to 20. Any church group is welcome. They are hoping to build a large conference building and are presently going through the O.M.B. Isabel Thompson, Agnes Breg- man, and Helen Elliott conducted a workshop on the study books to be used in the coming year - one about the Philippines and the other on Islam. Erlma Haldenby presented a Bible Study and Worship service on the theme “Go and Tell’’. This day of enlightening, both in the introduction of the program books and the viewing of this conference centre, enabled each of the members to return home better equipped for the coming year. was on. One big hurricane that devasted Puerto Rico, St. Croix and many other islands in the Carribean along its path and was now heading towards Georgia and the Carolinas. Next morning as I anxiously watched and listened to the news, it told of what took place overnight. While people were able to manage .to brace their homes and take extra precaution in preparation for Hugo’s bluster, it was still a great calamity. Thousands were left homeless and with much wreckage to clean up. Hundreds were hurt and some lost their lives. Yet in spite of all this seemingly unprece dented damage it could have been worse, so much worse. Thanks to the aid of modern media commun ication, people can prepare. “What is man that thou art mindful of him and the son of man that thou care for him?’’ Sometimes, it takes a natural disaster or calamity like this for man to care or even just think about his or her fellow human beings. If God does care for us so much so that He placed all things on earth and in the universe that we need for our continual existence, shouldn’t we, as a human race care for each other and all of his creation. It says in this Psalm that God has given us dominion over all his creation both above and below. Are we mindful of God’s creation as he is mindful of us? Shouldn’t we care? in Clinton ceremony Morris names MARQUIS - SNELL Mark Gary Marquis of Toronto, the son of Mrs. Elizabeth Marquis of St. Catharines and Margaret Cenetta Jayne Snell, the daughter of Richard and Glenyce Snell, RR 1, Blyth, were married in St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Clinton, on August 26 at 4 p.m. Rev.
