The Citizen, 1989-09-27, Page 10PAGE 10. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1989. Belgrave Residents return from New Eng. Compiled by Mrs. Helen Stonehouse. Phone 887-9487 Guest minister speaks Inspiring sacred music presented by Mrs. Elizabeth Procter organist, and Mrs. Sylvia Procter pianist, welcomed members of Knox Unit ed Church, Calvin-Brick and visi tors from other churches as they filed into Knox United Sunday, September 24 for its anniversary service. The sanctuary and vestibule were tastefully decorated with ar rangements of chrysanthemums and a variety of other flowers supplemented by greenery. Each window sill was graced with a bud vase two coloured blooms and fern. Mrs. Sarah Anderson and Mrs. Marlene Procter greeted members in the foyer. Mrs. Procter chose piano accom paniment for the choir as they sang, “Seek and Ye Shall Find’’. She accompanied on the organ for the number, “God and the Wand erers’’. Rev. Peter D. Tucker, B.A., B.D. conducted the service. The guests speaker was Rev. Roger McCombe, who chose the scripture lesson from John 13, which related the account of Jesus washing the disciples’ feet. In a secular reading “Is There Anything I Can Do?” Rev. Mc Combe recounted the story of a tragic death in an accident. While some persons overwhelm ed by grief, did nothing, an unassuming man offered to clean all the family’s shoes in prepara tion for the funeral. The bereaved widow soon collected her thoughts and gained control of her emotions. In an emergency, think of one task which you can do. How do you know? Maybe Christ wants you to shine shoes! To illustrate the children’s story the speaker used a white placard with a single large black spot. He asked, “what do you see?” Each child responded “A black spot”. No one replied “ a white area”. Let each parent see the white part; not just the black mark, he said. Commend your child, rather than 4-H "'Looking out for No. 1” The first meeting of “Looking Out For #1” of the Belgrave 4H Club was held at the Women’s Institute Hall September 20, 1989. The meeting opened by everyone repeating the 4H pledge. The officers were then elected. Presi dent is Carol Hopper; Vice-Presi dent, Jennifer Elston; Secretary, Lisa Alexander and Press Reporter, Margie Gordon. Members then discussed keep ing their bodies healthy. Everday the body needs food, water and sleep. Without these you are an accident waiting to happen. It is a known fact that teens frequently do not get adequate iron, calcium or vitamin C because of food habits or poor food choices. Canada’s Food Guide was dis cussed and examples of food given for each food group. Members scored themselves on the food they had eaten that day. Did you drink 6 - 8 glasses of water today? 4H members require 9 - 10 hours of sleep a day. Did you know most farm deaths and injuries happen in mid-morning and mid-afternoon. Members played an interesting nutrition game and closed the meeting with the 4H motto. Balanced meals we must eat To stay alert and feel real neat A healthy you will feel so good If you have sleep, water and food. chastise him. A hug coupon was given to each child on his departure for the schoolroom with Mrs. Dan McBurney in charge. Rev. McCombe’s central re marks for his sermon were, “Are you ready to wash feet.” He believes churches should be sim ple. “Are you ready to wash feet?” he asked. Discard the cross, as an emblem wear a towel instead. A towel could replace the clergy man’s stole. Christ wants you to make a difference. Keep alert, wash feet and shine shoes with the humour of Christ! The hymns sung were “Father of Heaven”, “Joyful, joyful we adore Thee” and “Jesus is the Man who Cares”. Rev. Tucker expressed his thanks to the guest speaker and extended a warm welcome to all present. Offertory stewards were: Darlene Black, Kenneth Procter, Mark Coultes and Ross Higgins.
