THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13,1989.Knights Auburn ‘B’ champs Port Albert Bulldogs defeated Nile 9 - 6 to capture the Auburn Lions Club’s annual slo-pitch tour­ nament Sunday. The championship game was the culmination of a 16-team tournament. Two teams from the Blyth league, Knights and Pirates fought it out for the “B” championship with the Knights scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and holding off Pirates in the top of the seventh to win the title with a 7-5 score. Pirates had rallied in the top of the sixth to tie the game with a three-run home run. Knights lost to the Nile in the first round before beating Metal Benders 15-4; and Auburn 21-1. Pirates dropped their first game to the Lazers 17-14 before beating Port Albert Pirates 6-5 and Auburn 12-11. The two Auburn teams ended up on the sidelines by the finals. Auburn “A” lost both its games to Lakeland and Park House while Auburn lost to the Bulldogs, de­ feated Port Albert Pirates, then lots to Blyth Pirates. Proceeds from the tournament go to community work carried out by the Lions Club. While many were minor hockey players looking for free ice time, several skaters have come forward to impress the coaching staff. In goal Murray Townsend and John Steffler return but are being challenged by strong play from Peter Stewart (Howick), Steve Soe- der (Monkton) and Richard Lyndon (Clinton). Bevin Flett and J. C. Hewitt have signed on defence from the Wing­ ham Ironmen while Craig Robert­ son, Kevin Talsma, Joel Baker and Ron Buchanan return from last season. As well Jeff Coulter (Mil­ verton) and Craig King (Howick) have had strong showings. Steve Vandendool (Clinton), Joe Walker (Wingham), and 16 year old Andrew Weber (Howick) along with returnee Marty Rutledge look strong on right wing while Dwaine Nicholls, Ken Jacklin and Kevin DeJong (Lucknow) are battling signee’s Bob McMillan and Brett Martin (Wingham Jr. C) for left wing positions. Jeff Berninger (Harriston), Paul Sebastian (Milverton), Jason Krae­ mer (Teeswater), Jason Coulter and the surprise of the camp 14-year-old Ryan Gallaher from the Howick Peewees are vying for centre ice spots. These are the early surprises of training camp as more players are expected to shine while they skate themselves into shape for the upcoming season. The Bulls will be practicing this weekend in Wingham starting Fri­ day at 9:00, Saturday at 3:00 and Sunday at 1:00. The coaching staff is hoping to be down to 35 players by the end of the weekend as they prepare for their league opener Oct. 1 in Walkerton. Londesboro 4-H club forms Those interested in learning to prepare nutritious and tasty meals and snacks fast will get their chance in a new 4H club “Good Foods Fast” now forming in the Londesboro area. Those between 11 and 21 years of age as of January 1, 1989 are welcome to join the new club. Leaders of the club are Jo-Ann Campschroer (523-4248) and Mar­ tina Bos.
