Agri-Food promotions planned Special lady Mrs. Mary McQuarrie of Catherine Street in Brussels, celebrated her 93rd birthday on Thursday, August 31. Family members gathered on Saturday to commemorate the special occasion. New teachers start year at area schools Area schools have welcomed many new faces to their teaching staff this week as the school year of 1989 commenced. In Blyth, Dorothy Morgan has taken her first teaching position at the public school as the new Grade seven teacher, while Michelle Hencjier transferred from Vanastra to teach Grade two. Allan Sygrove from Seaforth is filling the position of Principal after Bill Black’s transfer to Zurich. Wayne Tessier will be replacing Grey’s Principal, Rick Whitley, who has been transferred to Brook­ side. In addition, Miss Suzanne Rose and James Binns have joined the staff as well. Miss Rose has been hired as the Grade one-two teacher and Mr. Binns as the new School Resource Teacher. Belgrave Co-op marks 75th anniversary United Co-operatives of Ontario, Belgrave branch, will celebrate its 75th anniversary Saturday night with a barn dance in the mill in Belgrave. This year marks the 75th anni­ versary of both the UCO and the Belgrave branch. Opening cere­ monies for the birthday bash will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday with the barn dance to follow. WATC H OUT FOR CNHDREN CROSSING A special display on Agri-Food promotions is being established thisr year for the first time at the Brussels Fair on September 19 and 20. According to Secretary-Treasur­ er of the Agricultural Society, Barb Mutter, the display is being pre­ sented to educate rural urban populations about agriculture and food. Leona Armstrong, Reeve of Grey Township further explained, “Three per cent of the total population are farmers now, and Award for history honours Brussels teacher The Huron County Board of Education was to vote yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon on a recom­ mendation to establish the Hazel Matheson History Award at Brus­ sels Public School. Mrs. Matheson, a long-time resident of Brussels passed away this past April. She was the first Kindergarten teacher in Brussels Public School when the class was formed in January of 1961. She taught there for several years. Mrs. Matheson was also a local historian and prepared many articles on local history. Should HCBE vote in favour of the recommendation the first ann­ ual award of $100 will be presented in June of 1990 to a grade eight student of Brussels Public School. The Matheson family, who esta- OPP report quiet weekend The public must have taken heed to the warning issued by the Ontario Provincial Police last week concerning safety during the up­ coming long weekend. A spokesperson from the Wing­ ham OPP detachment said that the Labour Day weekend was “really quiet”. According to the OPP there was only the normal speeding and seat belt charges laid and one impaired charge, which they state is excellent for a long weekend. Displays will be by the milk, pork, beef and bean producers in addition to the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority and the Women’s Institute. There will also be displays on apples, maple syrup, vegetables, poultry and eggs. Other features of this year’s fair blished the award in memory ot their mother, have suggested that the recipient should not be selected solely on scholastic standing but also after considering their interest and aptitude in the field of history. The candidate will be chosen by the principal and intermediate teacher. In addition to the cash award, the recipient will be given a trophy and their name will be recorded on a wall plaque.
